TEMPERATURES AVERAGED BELOW NORMAL ACROSS WEST CENTRAL TEXAS
IN SEPTEMBER. THIS WAS INFLUENCED ESPECIALLY BY THE COOL
NIGHTTIME TEMPERATURES WHICH OCCURRED REPEATEDLY DURING THE
MIDDLE AND LATE PARTS OF THE MONTH.

PRECIPITATION FOR SEPTEMBER VARIED CONSIDERABLY ACROSS THE
REGION...FROM WELL BELOW NORMAL TO WELL ABOVE NORMAL. THE
HIGHEST AMOUNTS FOR THE MONTH (GREATER THAN 5 INCHES) OCCURRED
IN NORTHWESTERN CROCKETT COUNTY). MONTHLY AMOUNTS OF 4 TO 5
INCHES OCCURRED IN PARTS OF BROWN COUNTY. THE LOWEST
PRECIPITATION AMOUNTS (LESS THAN ONE HALF INCH) OCCURRED IN
SCATTERED POCKETS...ACROSS THE WESTERN BIG COUNTRY AND ACROSS
SOUTHEASTERN SECTIONS OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. THESE AMOUNTS
WERE LESS THAN 25 PERCENT OF NORMAL PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH.

AT ABILENE REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR
SEPTEMBER WAS 72.9 DEGREES. THIS WAS 2.6 DEGREES BELOW THE
NORMAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 75.5 DEGREES. TOTAL PRECIPITATION
FOR SEPTEMBER WAS 2.51 INCHES. THIS WAS 0.40 INCHES BELOW THE
MONTHLY NORMAL OF 2.91 INCHES.

AT SAN ANGELO REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR
SEPTEMBER WAS 72.3 DEGREES. THIS WAS 2.5 DEGREES BELOW THE
NORMAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 74.8 DEGREES. THIS MARKS THE
10TH COOLEST SEPTEMBER ON RECORD AT SAN ANGELO. TOTAL
PRECIPITATION FOR SEPTEMBER WAS 3.99 INCHES. THIS WAS 1.04
INCHES ABOVE THE MONTHLY NORMAL OF 2.95 INCHES.


SEPTEMBER 2008 WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS...

A PERIOD OF WET WEATHER OCCURRED EARLY IN THE MONTH...FROM THE
8TH THROUGH THE 10TH. ON THE 8TH...A COLD FRONT ENTERED THE
REGION FROM THE NORTH AND INTERACTED WITH A VERY MOIST AIRMASS.
NUMEROUS SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED ACROSS THE NORTHERN
HALF OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF ONE HALF TO 1.5
INCHES WERE COMMON...AND SOME LOCATIONS RECEIVED BETWEEN 1.5 AND
3 INCHES. IN PARTS OF BROWN COUNTY...OVER 3 INCHES OF RAINFALL
OCCURRED. AT THE SAN ANGELO REGIONAL AIRPORT...3.05 INCHES ON
THE 8TH SET A DAILY RECORD RAINFALL FOR THAT DATE.

ON THE 9TH...THE COVERAGE OF SHOWERS AND STORMS SHIFTED SOUTH
ACROSS THE SOUTHERN HALF OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. ISOLATED SHOWERS
OCCURRED OVER THE NORTHERN HALF. RAINFALL AMOUNTS IN THE RANGE
OF ONE HALF TO 1.5 INCHES OCCURRED OVER AREAS OF THE NORTHERN
EDWARDS PLATEAU AND NORTHWEST HILL COUNTRY. A FEW LOCATIONS
RECEIVED BETWEEN 1.5 AND 3 INCHES. WITH THE INFLUENCE OF AN
UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE ON THE 10TH...MORE SHOWERS AFFECTED THE
AREA GENERALLY WEST OF A LINE FROM THROCKMORTON TO SAN ANGELO TO
SONORA. SCATTERED LOCATIONS RECEIVED 1 TO 2 INCHES OF RAIN. THE
HEAVIEST RAINFALL (1.5 TO 3 INCHES) OCCURRED ACROSS WESTERN
IRION COUNTY AND MUCH OF CROCKETT COUNTY. VERY HEAVY RAINFALL OF
3 TO 5 INCHES AFFECTED FAR NORTHWESTERN CROCKETT COUNTY AND THE
ADJACENT PECOS VALLEY.

THE COMBINATION OF COOLER AIR WHICH FILTERED DOWN BEHIND THE
COLD FRONT...CLOUDS AND PRECIPITATION HELD TEMPERATURES DOWN
INTO THE 70S FOR HIGHS AT ABILENE AND SAN ANGELO ON THE 9TH
AND 10TH. A RECORD COOL MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 71 DEGREES WAS
SET AT SAN ANGELO ON THE 9TH.

DURING THE POST-MIDNIGHT HOURS OF THE 13TH...HURRICANE IKE
MADE LANDFALL ALONG THE TEXAS COAST NEAR GALVESTON. "IKE"
THEN WEAKENED AND TRACKED NORTH ACROSS THE EASTERN PART OF
TEXAS ON THE 13TH. THE RAINFALL WITH THIS TROPICAL SYSTEM
OCCURRED EAST OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. WITH A MOIST AIRMASS
HOWEVER...A FEW SHOWERS AND STORMS OCCURRED ON THE 13TH.
A FEW ADDITIONAL SHOWERS AND STORMS AFFECTED CROCKETT AND
SOUTHERN IRION COUNTIES DURING THE OVERNIGHT HOURS OF THE 13TH
AND 14TH. A FEW LOCATIONS ACROSS THAT AREA RECEIVED ONE HALF
TO ONE INCH OF RAIN.

A COLD FRONT ADVANCED DOWN ACROSS WEST CENTRAL TEXAS ON THE
14TH...BRINING COOLER AND DRIER AIR TO THE REGION. ON THE
15TH...TEMPERATURES DROPPED INTO THE 50S FOR LOWS AT ABILENE
AND SAN ANGELO...FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE MIDDLE OF MAY.
AS HIGH PRESSURE SETTLED INTO THE AREA ON THE FOLLOWING NIGHT...
TEMPERATURES DROPPED INTO THE 40S FOR LOWS ACROSS MUCH OF
WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. AT SAN ANGELO...A RECORD LOW TEMPERATURE
OF 47 DEGREES WAS SET ON THE 16TH.

DURING THE SECOND HALF OF THE MONTH...A RATHER TRANQUIL
WEATHERN PATTERN OCCURRED ACROSS WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. A SERIES
OF EXTENSIVE HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEMS DOMINATED THE WEATHER
ACROSS THE REGION. WITH THIS PATTERN...SKIES WERE CLEAR TO
PARTLY CLOUDY EACH DAY WITH WARM DAYS AND COOL NIGHTS.
