Light to moderate snow will continue into Saturday over the Great Lakes, Central Appalachians, and Northeast. This weekend into next week, a series of atmospheric rivers will bring gusty winds, periods of heavy rain, and mountain snow to northern California and the Pacific Northwest. TEMPERATURES AVERAGED SLIGHTLY BELOW TO NEAR NORMAL FOR
WEST CENTRAL TEXAS IN SEPTEMBER.

AT ABILENE REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR 
SEPTEMBER WAS 73.9 DEGREES. THIS WAS 1.6 DEGREES BELOW THE 
NORMAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 75.5 DEGREES. TOTAL 
PRECIPITATION FOR SEPTEMBER WAS ONLY 0.20 INCHES. THIS WAS 
2.71 INCHES BELOW THE MONTHLY NORMAL OF 2.91 INCHES. THIS 
WAS THE 9TH DRIEST SEPTEMBER ON RECORD FOR ABILENE. 

AT SAN ANGELO REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE 
FOR SEPTEMBER WAS 74.6 DEGREES. THIS WAS 0.2 DEGREES BELOW 
THE NORMAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 74.8 DEGREES. TOTAL 
PRECIPITATION FOR SEPTEMBER WAS 2.05 INCHES. THIS WAS 0.90 
INCHES BELOW THE MONTHLY NORMAL OF 2.95 INCHES. 


SEPTEMBER 2004 WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS...

RAINFALL VARIED WIDELY ACROSS WEST CENTRAL TEXAS IN 
SEPTEMBER...RANGING FROM NEAR NORMAL TO MUCH BELOW 
NORMAL. PARTS OF THE SOUTHEASTERN...SOUTHWESTERN AND
FAR WESTERN SECTIONS OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS RECEIVED 
RAINFALL CLOSER TO NORMAL (2 TO 3 INCHES)...ALTHOUGH 
SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL FOR THE MONTH. OTHER AREAS 
EXPERIENCED WELL BELOW NORMAL RAINFALL. MONTHLY
TOTALS WERE LESS THAN ONE HALF INCH FOR NUMEROUS 
LOCATIONS EAST OF HIGHWAY 277.

OVERALL...SEPTEMBER WAS MARKED BY A LACK OF RAINFALL 
THROUGH THE EARLY AND MIDDLE PARTS OF THE MONTH...FOLLOWED 
BY A WETTER PERIOD LATE IN THE MONTH.

HIGH PRESSURE DOMINATED THE WEATHER IN WEST CENTRAL TEXAS
DURING EARLY SEPTEMBER. A COOLER AND MUCH DRIER AIRMASS...
MORE TYPICAL OF THE END OF SEPTEMBER OR EARLY OCTOBER...
SETTLED SOUTHWARD INTO THE REGION AFTER A COLD FRONTAL 
PASSAGE ON THE 6TH. RECORD LOW TEMPERATURES WERE ESTABLISHED 
IN ABILENE AND SAN ANGELO ON THE 8TH AND 9TH. RELATIVE 
HUMIDITIES DROPPED INTO THE 20 PERCENT RANGE DURING THE 
AFTERNOONS ON SEVERAL DAYS FOLLOWING THE FRONTAL PASSAGE. 

DURING THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH A HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM ALOFT...
WHICH EXTENDED FROM TEXAS NORTHEASTWARD...DOMINATED THE 
OVERALL WEATHER PATTERN IN WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. TEMPERATURES
WERE ABOVE NORMAL DURING THIS TIME. SOME MOISTURE RETURNED
TO THE REGION...AND THIS ALLOWED ISOLATED SHOWERS AND 
THUNDERSTORMS TO OCCUR ON A FEW OCCASIONS. RAINFALL AMOUNTS 
WERE GENERALLY LESS THAN ONE QUARTER OF AN INCH. 

WIDELY SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WEST OF AN 
ABILENE TO SAN ANGELO TO SONORA LINE DURING THE OVERNIGHT
HOURS OF THE 22ND AND 23RD. A FEW LOCATIONS RECEIVED OVER
AN INCH OF RAIN. 

NUMEROUS SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED FROM THE LATE
AFTERNOON THROUGH EARLY NIGHTTIME HOURS OF THE 23RD ACROSS 
THE SOUTHERN BIG COUNTRY...CONCHO VALLEY...HEARTLAND AND 
NORTHWEST HILL COUNTRY. THE COVERAGE OF SHOWERS AND STORMS 
WAS SCATTERED ACROSS THE NORTHERN EDWARDS PLATEAU. RAINFALL 
AMOUNTS OF ONE HALF TO ONE INCH WERE COMMON. LOCALIZED VERY 
HEAVY RAIN OCCURRED...WITH RAINFALL OF 1 TO 2 INCHES AT A 
FEW LOCATIONS. A STORM PRODUCED A 64 MPH WIND GUST ALONG 
WITH 1.48 INCHES OF RAIN AT THE SAN ANGELO REGIONAL 
AIRPORT. SOME STREET FLOODING WAS REPORTED IN THE SOUTHERN 
PART OF SAN ANGELO.

WIDELY SCATTERED SHOWERS AND STORMS OCCURRED ON THE 
AFTERNOON OF THE 24TH. A FEW LOCATIONS ACROSS THE BIG 
COUNTRY AND NORTHWESTERN CONCHO VALLEY RECEIVED OVER AN 
INCH OF RAIN. 

A STORM SYSTEM SLOWLY MOVED FROM NEW MEXICO ACROSS WEST 
TEXAS FROM THE 25TH TO THE 28TH. THIS SYSTEM BROUGHT 
ADDITIONAL SHOWERS AND STORMS TO MAINLY THE WESTERN HALF 
OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS DURING THIS TIME FRAME. MOST OF THE 
HEAVIER RAIN (GREATER THAN ONE HALF INCH) FELL WEST OF A 
SWEETWATER TO SAN ANGELO TO SONORA LINE. RAINFALL OF 1 TO 
2 INCHES WAS COMMON WEST OF A SONORA TO MERTZON TO COLORADO 
CITY LINE...WITH SCATTERED 2 TO 3 INCH AMOUNTS.
