SEPTEMBER 2002 WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS...

HIGH PRESSURE AT THE SURFACE AND ALOFT DOMINATED THE WEST
CENTRAL TEXAS WEATHER ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS IN SEPTEMBER...
RESULTING IN DRY CONDITIONS AND BELOW NORMAL RAINFALL. THE
SEPTEMBER RAINFALL CAME FROM A FEW WEATHER SYSTEMS WHICH
BROUGHT SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS TO THE REGION.

IN EARLY SEPTEMBER...THE REMNANTS OF TROPICAL STORM FAY TRACKED
WESTWARD ACROSS SOUTHERN TEXAS. MOISTURE FROM THIS SYSTEM MOVED
NORTHWARD INTO WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. THIS SET THE STAGE FOR
NUMEROUS SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OVER THE SOUTHERN HEARTLAND
AND NORTHWEST HILL COUNTRY ON THE 7TH AND 8TH. ONE TO THREE
INCHES OF RAIN FELL IN SOME AREAS. NUMEROUS SHOWERS AND A FEW
STORMS OCCURRED FARTHER NORTH ACROSS MUCH OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS
ON THE 9TH.

NUMEROUS THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED ON THE 14TH...MAINLY WEST OF A
LINE FROM THROCKMORTON TO COLEMAN TO JUNCTION...AS A COLD FRONT
AND UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE MOVED INTO THE REGION. RAINFALL
AMOUNTS OF 1 TO 3 INCHES OCCURRED AT SCATTERED LOCATIONS.

ANOTHER ROUND OF THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED FROM THE EVENING OF
THE 18TH INTO THE EARLY MORNING HOURS OF THE 19TH...AS A COLD
FRONT AND UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE APPROACHED WEST CENTRAL
TEXAS. A COUPLE OF SEVERE STORMS OVER THE BIG COUNTRY CAUSED
WIND DAMAGE 6 MILES EAST OF ANSON...AND 5 MILES SOUTHWEST OF
ABILENE. THE HEAVIER RAINFALL OCCURRED NORTHWEST OF A
BROWNWOOD TO BALLINGER TO SONORA LINE. RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF
0.5 TO 1.5 INCHES WERE COMMON...AND SCATTERED LOCATIONS
ACROSS THE WESTERN BIG COUNTRY RECEIVED 2 TO 4 INCH AMOUNTS.
