Powerful Storms to Impact the Western U.S. and Northern Plains

A strong, long-duration atmospheric river will bring excessive rainfall, flash flooding, and very strong winds to southwest Oregon and northwest California through Thursday. ...PRECIPITATION WAS BELOW NORMAL AND TEMPERATURES AVERAGED ABOVE
NORMAL IN NOVEMBER...

FOR MOST OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS...PRECIPITATION FOR NOVEMBER WAS
WELL BELOW NORMAL. LESS THAN 25 PERCENT OF THE MONTHLY NORMAL
PRECIPITATION OCCURRED ACROSS MUCH OF THE AREA. A FEW LOCATIONS
FROM NORTHERN CROCKETT COUNTY INTO SOUTHERN MCCULLOCH COUNTY
RECEIVED OVER AN INCH OF PRECIPITATION FOR THE MONTH. SCATTERED
POCKETS SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 20 AND NORTH OF INTERSTATE 10 RECEIVED
A HALF TO ONE INCH. FOR MOST LOCATIONS HOWEVER...THE MONTHLY
AMOUNTS VARIED UNDER ONE HALF INCH.

AT ABILENE REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR NOVEMBER
WAS 55.0 DEGREES. THIS WAS 1.3 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE OF 53.7 DEGREES. TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR ABILENE IN
NOVEMBER WAS ONLY 0.11 INCHES. THIS WAS 1.19 INCHES BELOW THE
MONTHLY NORMAL OF 1.30 INCHES.

AT SAN ANGELO REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR
NOVEMBER WAS 55.4 DEGREES. THIS WAS 1.4 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 54.0 DEGREES. TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR SAN
ANGELO IN NOVEMBER WAS 0.23 INCHES. THIS WAS 0.87 INCHES
BELOW THE MONTHLY NORMAL OF 1.10 INCHES. 

NOVEMBER 2008 WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS...

WITH A PREVALENCE OF DRY AIR MASSES OVER THE REGION...PRECIPITATION
ONLY OCCURRED ON A FEW DAYS DURING NOVEMBER.

THE INFLUENCE OF HIGH PRESSURE DURING THE FIRST SEVERAL DAYS OF THE
MONTH RESULTED IN ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES...WITH HIGHS RANGING
FROM THE UPPER 70S TO MID 80S.

FROM THE EVENING OF THE 10TH INTO THE EARLY MORNING OF THE 11TH...
NUMEROUS SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED ACROSS MUCH OF THE
REGION SOUTHEAST OF A LINE FROM ALBANY TO ABILENE TO BIG LAKE.
AN UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE TRACKED FROM THE SOUTHERN ROCKIES INTO
THE CENTRAL PLAINS. SCATTERED LOCATIONS RECEIVED AMOUNTS RANGING
FROM ONE HALF INCH TO 1.5 INCHES.

ADDITIONAL FREEZES OCCURRED ON THE EARLY MORNINGS OF THE 7TH AND
8TH...ACROSS THE REGION SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 20. A NUMBER OF
LOCATIONS REPORTED LOW TEMPERATURES IN THE 20S ON THOSE DAYS.

GUSTY NORTH WINDS FOLLOWED PASSAGE OF A STRONG COLD FRONT ON THE
14TH. A PEAK WIND GUST OF 41 MPH WAS RECORDED AT THE ABILENE
REGIONAL AIRPORT. AS A HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM WITH DRY AND COLDER
AIR SETTLED OVER WEST CENTRAL TEXAS...A FREEZE OCCURRED AREAWIDE
ON THE EARLY MORNING OF THE 16TH. THIS MARKED THE FIRST FREEZE
OF THE AUTUMN SEASON ACROSS THE BIG COUNTRY. A HARD FREEZE
OCCURRED FARTHER TO THE SOUTH...WHERE LOW TEMPERATURES WERE IN
THE 20S.

ANOTHER STRONG COLD FRONTAL PASSAGE OCCURRED ON THE 20TH. HIGH
TEMPERATURES ON THE 21ST WERE IN THE UPPER 40S TO LOWER 50S...
DESPITE CONSIDERABLE SUNSHINE.

LIGHT RAIN SHOWERS WITH A COUPLE OF THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED
ACROSS MUCH OF THE NORTHERN HALF OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS...FROM
THE LATE EVENING OF THE 26TH INTO THE MORNING OF THE 27TH...
AS A COLD FRONT AND WEAK UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE MOVED ACROSS
THE REGION. SCATTERED LOCATIONS ACROSS THE WESTERN BIG COUNTRY
RECEIVED BETWEEN ONE TENTH AND ONE THIRD OF AN INCH. ELSEWHERE...
THE AMOUNTS WERE LESS THAN ONE TENTH OF AN INCH.
