Light to moderate snow will continue into Saturday over the Great Lakes, Central Appalachians, and Northeast. This weekend into next week, a series of atmospheric rivers will bring gusty winds, periods of heavy rain, and mountain snow to northern California and the Pacific Northwest. FROM SLIGHTLY ABOVE TO SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL...FOR WEST CENTRAL TEXAS
IN MAY...

AT SAN ANGELO REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR MAY WAS
75.6 DEGREES. THIS WAS 1.4 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL AVERAGE 
TEMPERATURE OF 74.2 DEGREES. TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR MAY WAS 2.52 
INCHES. THIS WAS 0.48 INCH BELOW THE MONTHLY NORMAL OF 3.00 INCHES. 

AT ABILENE REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR MAY WAS
73.8 DEGREES. THIS WAS 1.1 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL AVERAGE 
TEMPERATURE OF 72.7 DEGREES. TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR MAY WAS 3.63 
INCHES. THIS WAS 0.66 INCH ABOVE THE MONTHLY NORMAL OF 2.97 INCHES.  

MAY 2001 WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS...

MAY IN WEST CENTRAL TEXAS IS TYPICALLY ONE OF THE MOST ACTIVE MONTHS
WITH THUNDERSTORMS AND SEVERE WEATHER. THIS MAY...THE MORE WIDESPREAD
THUNDERSTORM EVENTS WERE CONFINED TO THE EARLY AND LATE PARTS OF  
THE MONTH.  

SEVERAL ROUNDS OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED ACROSS WEST 
CENTRAL TEXAS FROM THE 3RD THROUGH THE 5TH...DUE TO A COMBINATION OF  
A MOIST AIRMASS AND A SERIES OF UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCES MOVING INTO 
THE REGION. RAINFALL TOTALS OF 1 TO 2 INCHES WERE COMMON...BUT 
SCATTERED LOCATIONS RECEIVED 3 TO 5 INCH AMOUNTS. STREET FLOODING 
WAS REPORTED IN ABILENE ON THE 4TH. A SEVERE STORM PRODUCED GOLFBALL
SIZE HAIL IN SAN SABA ON THE 5TH.

SEVERAL SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED OVER THE HEARTLAND DURING THE 
LATE AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING HOURS OF THE 5TH...6TH...AND 7TH. 
THE MOST SEVERE STORM PRODUCED HAIL UP TO GRAPEFRUIT SIZE 3 MILES 
SOUTHEAST OF DOOLE IN MCCULLOCH COUNTY. OTHER SEVERE HAIL REPORTS
INCLUDED GOLFBALL SIZE AT SAN SABA...HALF DOLLAR SIZE IN CHAPPEL... 
AND QUARTER SIZE 3 MILES WEST OF PEAR VALLEY.   

WIDELY SCATTERED SHOWERS AND NON SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED 
ACROSS THE REST OF WEST CENTRAL FROM THE 5TH THROUGH THE 7TH.     
ALTHOUGH SOME LOCALIZED 2 TO 3 INCH RAINFALL AMOUNTS OCCURRED...
MOST LOCATIONS RECEIVED LESS THAN ONE QUARTER OF AN INCH.

WIDELY SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED ACROSS WEST 
CENTRAL TEXAS ON THE 8TH AND 13TH. A FEW SHOWERS AND STORMS OCCURRED
OVER SOUTHEASTERN SECTIONS ON THE 20TH. 

SAN ANGELO TIED A RECORD HIGH FOR THE 17TH...WHEN THE TEMPERATRE
REACHED 100 DEGREES FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS YEAR. ABILENE SET A NEW
RECORD LOW ON THE 22ND...WHEN THE TEMPERATURE DIPPED TO 43 DEGREES.

SCATTERED STRONG TO SEVERE STORMS OCCURRED OVER THE SOUTHERN THIRD 
OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS DURING THE EVENING AND EARLY NIGHTTIME HOURS
OF THE 24TH. NICKEL SIZE HAIL FELL IN ROOSEVELT IN KIMBLE COUNTY. 
LOCALIZED HEAVY RAIN ACCOMPANIED THE STORMS...WITH A FEW LOCATIONS
RECEIVING 1 TO 2 INCHES OF RAIN. 

A NORTHWESTERLY FLOW ALOFT PREVAILED OVER THE REGION LATE IN THE 
MONTH. THIS ALLOWED A SERIES OF THUNDERSTORM CLUSTERS TO DEVELOP 
OVER THE TEXAS PANHANDLE AND MOVE SOUTH INTO WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. 
DIME SIZE HAIL WAS REPORTED FROM A SEVERE STORM 3 MILES NORTH OF 
CLYDE ON THE EARLY MORNING OF THE 26TH. THE MAIN THUNDERSTORM EVENTS
OCCURRED ON THE 27TH AND 30TH. 

A THUNDERSTORM COMPLEX ROLLED SOUTH ACROSS THE AREA ON THE NIGHT OF
THE 27TH. MOST OF THE THUNDERSTORMS ON THAT NIGHT OCCURRED WEST OF A
LINE FROM ABILENE TO BALLINGER TO JUNCTION. SEVERE STORMS DOWNED 
TREE LIMBS IN IRION COUNTY...CAUSED SHINGLE DAMAGE TO THE ROOF OF AN 
APARTMENT COMPLEX IN SAN ANGELO...AND PRODUCED QUARTER SIZE HAIL 3 
MILES SOUTH OF CARLSBAD IN TOM GREEN COUNTY. THE STORMS ALSO BROUGHT
HEAVY RAIN...WITH SCATTERED LOCATIONS RECEIVING ONE TO TWO INCHES. 

NUMEROUS SEVERE STORMS OCCURRED OVER THE BIG COUNTRY ON THE EVENING
OF THE 30TH...AND AROUND TWO DOZEN SEVERE WEATHER REPORTS (LARGE 
HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS) WERE RECEIVED. UP TO BASEBALL SIZE HAIL WAS 
REPORTED AT ABILENE CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY. ONE TO THREE INCHES OF 
RAIN FELL AT NUMEROUS LOCATIONS ACROSS THE BIG COUNTRY.
