JUNE 2006 WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS...

A HOT AND DRY PATTERN...MORE TYPICAL OF MID-SUMMER...HAD DEVELOPED
ACROSS THE REGION DURING THE SECOND HALF OF MAY AND CONTINUED
THROUGH ABOUT THE FIRST HALF OF JUNE. DURING THIS TIME DAILY HIGH
TEMPERATURES IN THE 95-102 DEGREE RANGE WERE COMMON ACROSS WEST
CENTRAL TEXAS. THIS WAS BROUGHT ABOUT BY A PERSISTENT HIGH
PRESSURE SYSTEM ALOFT...WHICH WAS SITUATED OVER TEXAS...THE
SOUTHERN ROCKIES...AND THE SOUTHERN PLAINS.

DURING THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH...THIS HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM
WEAKENED WHILE A MODERATELY STRONG UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE
DROPPED SOUTHEAST INTO THE REGION. CLUSTERS OF STRONG TO SEVERE
THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED FROM THE EVENING OF THE 16TH TO THE
EARLY MORNING HOURS OF THE 18TH. A NUMBER OF THESE STORMS
WERE SEVERE WITH LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS. THE STRONGEST
WINDS (70 MPH GUSTS) WERE REPORTED AT IMPACT (TAYLOR COUNTY) AND
OZONA. THE WINDS DOWNED TREES AND POWER LINES IN OZONA. THE
LARGEST HAIL (GOLFBALL SIZE) WAS REPORTED AT TYE...8 MILES WEST
OF CLYDE...BUFFALO GAP...9 MILES SOUTHEAT OF HASKELL...ORIENT...
7 MILES EAST OF ALBANY...AND 13 MILES WEST-NORTHWEST OF ALBANY.

THE STORMS PRODUCED PEAK WIND GUSTS OF 60 MPH AT THE ABILENE
REGIONAL AIRPORT ON THE 17TH AND 45 MPH ON THE 16TH. AT SAN
ANGELO REGIONAL AIRPORT A PEAK WIND GUST OF 43 MPH OCCURRED
ON THE 17TH.

THE STORMS ALSO CONTAINED HEAVY RAIN...AND BENEFICIAL RAINFALL
OCCURRED ACROSS AREAS OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS FROM THE 16TH TO
18TH. RAINFALL TOTALS OF 1 TO 2 INCHES OCCURRED ACROSS MUCH OF
THE AREA SOUTHEAST OF A LINE FROM LAKE STAMFORD TO BALLINGER
TO MENARD TO OZONA. ABILENE RECORDED 1.64 INCHES DURING THESE
DAYS WHILE JUNCTION RECEIVED 2.01 INCHES. ONLY 0.2 INCHES WAS
RECORDED AT THE SAN ANGELO REGIONAL AIRPORT. LIGHTNING STARTED
A LARGE GRASS FIRE IN FAR SOUTHERN TOM GREEN COUNTY EARLY ON
THE 18TH. A SMOKE PLUME FROM THIS FIRE WAS VISIBLE IN SAN
ANGELO.

THE HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM ALOFT BECAME RE-FOCUSED OVER THE
SOUTHWESTERN STATES AND INTERMOUNTAIN WEST FROM THE MIDDLE TO
LATE PART OF JUNE. THIS RESULTED IN WEAK NORTH TO NORTHWEST
FLOW ALOFT INTO TEXAS. WITH THIS PATTERN...TEMPERATURES WERE
NOT AS HOT AND CLOSER TO NORMAL. WITH AVAILABLE MOISTURE AND
THE SUPPORT OF WEAK DISTURBANCES ALOFT...SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED ACROSS VARIOUS PARTS OF WEST CENTRAL
TEXAS FROM THE 22ND THROUGH THE 26TH. RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF
ONE HALF TO ONE INCH FELL AT WIDELY SCATTERED LOCATIONS...
AND A FEW LOCATIONS RECEIVED OVER AN INCH. DURING THE LAST
SEVERAL DAYS OF THE MONTH...A HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM DROPPED
SOUTH INTO THE REGION. THIS RESULTED IN TEMPERATURES BELOW
NORMAL. RECORD LOW TEMPERATURES WERE SET AT ABILENE AND SAN
ANGELO ON THE 27TH.
