Powerful Storms to Impact the Western U.S. and Northern Plains

A strong, long-duration atmospheric river will bring excessive rainfall, flash flooding, and very strong winds to southwest Oregon and northwest California through Thursday. ...TEMPERATURES AVERAGED NEAR TO ABOVE NORMAL WHILE PRECIPITATION 
VARIED WIDELY ACROSS WEST CENTRAL TEXAS IN JUNE...

JUNE PRECIPITATION VARIED FROM BELOW TO ABOVE NORMAL IN WEST CENTRAL 
TEXAS...DUE TO THE SCATTERED COVERAGE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS. AN 
ACTIVE SEVERE WEATHER PATTERN OCCURRED DURING THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH.

AT ABILENE REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR JUNE WAS 
79.4 DEGREES. THIS WAS 0.4 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL AVERAGE  
TEMPERATURE OF 79.8 DEGREES. TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR JUNE WAS 0.81
INCHES. THIS WAS 2.25 INCHES BELOW THE MONTHLY NORMAL OF 3.06 INCHES.

AT SAN ANGELO REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR JUNE WAS
81.6 DEGREES. THIS WAS 2.4 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL AVERAGE 
TEMPERATURE OF 79.2 DEGREES. TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR JUNE WAS 0.88  
INCHES. THIS WAS 1.64 INCHES BELOW THE MONTHLY NORMAL OF 2.52 INCHES.
HOWEVER...PARTS OF THE CITY OF SAN ANGELO RECEIVED CONSIDERABLY MORE 
RAINFALL THAN AT THE AIRPORT DURING JUNE.


JUNE 2002 WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS...

SEVERE STORMS PRODUCED TORNADOES IN THE VICINITY OF STAMFORD AND ELBERT 
ON THE EVENING OF THE 4TH. THE TORNADO NEAR STAMFORD UPROOTED TREES. AS 
A COLD FRONT ADVANCED DOWN INTO WEST CENTRAL TEXAS DURING THE OVERNIGHT 
HOURS OF THE 4TH AND EARLY 5TH...NUMEROUS THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED OVER 
THE NORTHERN BIG COUNTRY...WITH SCATTERED STORMS OVER THE HEARTLAND. 
RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 2 TO 4 INCHES OCCURRED OVER PARTS OF HASKELL AND 
THROCKMORTON COUNTIES. AS THE FRONT CONTINUED TO MOVE SOUTH...
ADDITIONAL SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED ACROSS THE 
SOUTHERN HALF OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS ON THE 5TH. SCATTERED LOCATIONS 
RECEIVED 1 TO 3 INCHES OF RAIN...BUT THE HEAVIEST RAINFALL OF 3 TO 4 
INCHES OCCURRED IN NORTHERN SCHLEICHER AND SOUTHERN IRION COUNTIES. 

NUMEROUS SLOW-MOVING SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WITH HEAVY RAIN OCCURRED
OVER CENTRAL AND SOUTHEASTERN SECTIONS OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS ON THE
AFTERNOON AND EVENING OF THE 7TH. SCATTERED LOCATIONS RECEIVED ONE TO
THREE INCHES OF RAIN...AND A FEW LOCATIONS RECEIVED OVER FOUR INCHES.

WITH UNSTABLE AIR OVER THE REGION AND AN APPROACHING COLD FRONT... 
SEVERAL STRONG TO SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED IN WEST CENTRAL TEXAS 
ON THE EVENING AND EARLY NIGHTTIME HOURS OF THE 13TH. ONE OF THE SEVERE
STORMS ONE OF THE SEVERE STORMS MOVED FROM NEAR STAMFORD SOUTH ACROSS 
TAYLOR COUNTY INTO NORTHERN RUNNELS COUNTY. THIS STORM PRODUCED A BRIEF
TORNADO NEAR INTERSTATE 20 IN TYE. BASEBALL SIZE HAIL FROM THIS STORM 
WAS REPORTED IN THE TOWNS OF TYE AND VIEW IN TAYLOR COUNTY. THIS 
RESULTED IN SEVERAL INJURIES AND CAUSED HEAVY DAMAGE TO MOBILE HOMES 
IN TYE. SEVERAL WINDSHIELDS WERE BROKEN IN VIEW. GOLFBALL SIZE HAIL 
WAS REPORTED AT A FEW OTHER LOCATIONS WHICH WERE IN THE PATH OF THIS 
STORM. OTHER SEVERE STORMS OVER THE WESTERN CONCHO VALLEY AT MERTZON 
AND 1 MILE SOUTH OF TANKERSLEY. THE SAN ANGELO REGIONAL AIRPORT 
RECORDED A 55 MPH WIND GUST. RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 1 TO 2.5 INCHES 
OCCURRED AT SCATTERED LOCATIONS. A THUNDERSTORM COMPLEX MOVED SOUTH 
INTO WEST CENTRAL TEXAS DURING THE MORNING HOURS OF THE 15TH...AND 
BROUGHT VERY HEAVY RAINFALL. THIS STORM COMPLEX AFFECTED PRIMARILY THE
WESTERN BIG COUNTRY...CONCHO VALLEY...AND HEARTLAND. MANY LOCATIONS 
RECEIVED OVER AN INCH OF RAIN. THE HEAVIEST RAINFALL...IN THE 2 TO 4 
INCH RANGE... OCCURRED AT SCATTERED LOCATIONS. PARTS OF SAN ANGELO 
RECEIVED OVER 2 INCHES...AND THIS CAUSED SIGNIFICANT STREET FLOODING. 

A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM COMPLEX RACED SOUTH ACROSS THE EASTERN HALF OF 
WEST CENTRAL TEXAS DURING THE OVERNIGHT AND EARLY MORNING HOURS OF THE
15TH AND 16TH. THE STRONGEST WINDS OCCURRED IN THE BIG COUNTRY...CONCHO
VALLEY...AND HEARTLAND. WIND DAMAGE WAS REPORTED AT SEVERAL LOCATIONS. 
WIND GUSTS OF 60 TO 70 MPH WERE REPORTED IN PARTS OF THE BIG COUNTRY. 
AT THE SAN ANGELO REGIONAL AIRPORT...A WIND GUST OF 61 MPH WAS 
RECORDED. RAINFALL TOTALS FROM 1 TO 2.5 INCHES OCCURRED OVER MUCH OF 
THE BIG COUNTRY AND HEARTLAND.  

SCATTERED AND LESS ORGANIZED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED ACROSS
VARIOUS PARTS OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS LATE IN THE MONTH. ON THE EARLY 
MORNING HOURS OF THE 27TH...A DISSIPATING THUNDERSTORM COMPLEX ENTERED 
THE NORTHWESTERN CONCHO VALLEY...BUT WAS ACCOMPANIED BY STRONG WINDS.
A 60 MPH WIND GUST WAS REPORTED IN COKE COUNTY...AND WIND DAMAGE TO 
TREE LIMBS WAS REPORTED IN WATER VALLEY.

TROPICAL MOISTURE MOVED INTO THE REGION FROM THE SOUTHEAST TOWARD THE 
END OF THE MONTH. THIS RESULTED IN HUMID CONDITIONS...MORE CLOUDCOVER 
AND LOWER DAYTIME TEMPERATURES.
