JULY 2010 WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS...

THE WETTER AND COOLER PATTERN...WHICH DEVELOPED DURING THE
LAST WEEK IN JUNE...CONTINUED THROUGH THE FIRST PART OF JULY
ACROSS WEST CENTRAL TEXAS.

DURING THE FIRST COUPLE OF DAYS IN JULY...HURRICANE ALEX
MOVED FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO INTO EAST-CENTRAL MEXICO...
AND WEAKENED FROM A HURRICANE TO A TROPICAL STORM. MOISTURE
FROM THIS TROPICAL SYSTEM WAS TRANSPORTED NORTH ACROSS WEST
CENTRAL TEXAS. THIS RESULTED IN WIDESPREAD COVERAGE OF
SHOWERS WITH A FEW THUNDERSTORMS...AND WITH LOCALLY HEAVY
RAINFALL. THE CONCENTRATION OF SHOWERS AND STORMS SHIFTED
WESTWARD ON THE 3RD AND 4TH.

A WEAK COLD FRONT SAGGED SOUTH INTO THE BIG COUNTRY ON THE
8TH BEFORE STALLING. A VERY MOIST AIRMASS REMAINED OVER THE
REGION. WITH THE INTERACTION OF WEAK DISTURBANCES AND THE
FRONTAL BOUNDARY WITH THE VERY MOIST AIRMASS...THE COVERAGE
OF RAIN SHOWERS WAS MORE WIDESPREAD ON THE 7TH THROUGH 9TH.
SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ALSO OCCURRED.

FOR THE 1ST THROUGH THE 10TH...RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 2 TO 4
INCHES WERE WIDESPREAD ACROSS WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. WIDELY
SCATTERED LOCATIONS RECEIVED MORE THAN 5 INCHES. WITH THE
RAINFALL AND EXTENSIVE CLOUD COVER...TEMPERATURES WERE HELD
TO THE 80S FOR HIGHS ACROSS MOST OF THE AREA. A RECORD LOW
MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 82 DEGREES WAS SET AT SAN ANGELO ON
THE 1ST. HIGHS IN THE UPPER 70S WERE RECORDED AT JUNCTION ON
THE 1ST...AND AT ABILENE ON THE 2ND. TEMPERATURES WERE HELD
INTO THE 80S FOR HIGHS ON THE 8TH AND 9TH.

A SEASONALLY HOT AND DRY PATTERN PREVAILED DURING THE MIDDLE
OF THE MONTH...WHEN AN UPPER LEVEL HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM WAS
SITUATED OVER THE REGION.

LATE IN THE MONTH...THE UPPER LEVEL HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM
SHIFTED INTO THE SOUTHEASTERN STATES. SCATTERED SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED ON THE 22ND AND 23RD. THE COVERAGE OF
SHOWERS AND STORMS INCREASED ON THE 25TH...26TH...AND 27TH AS
AN UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE MOVED NORTHWEST INTO WEST CENTRAL
TEXAS AND INTERACTED WITH A MOIST AIRMASS OVER THE REGION.
SCATTERED LOCATIONS RECEIVED RAINFALL AMOUNTS RANGING FROM 1
TO 3 INCHES...ESPECIALLY ON THE 26TH AND 27TH. A FEW LOCATIONS
RECEIVED OVER 3 INCHES...AND ABILENE RECORDED A RECORD DAILY
RAINFALL OF 3.15 INCHES ON THE 27TH. THE COVERAGE OF SHOWERS
AND STORMS BECAME SCATTERED AGAIN ON THE 28TH...AS THE
DISTURBANCE MOVED FARTHER AWAY FROM THE REGION.

A HOT AND DRY PATTERN RETURNED TO THE AREA ON THE LAST FEW
DAYS OF THE MONTH...AS THE UPPER LEVEL HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM
MOVED WESTWARD AND STRENGTHENED OVER TEXAS.
