JULY 2004 WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS...

JULY WEATHER IN WEST CENTRAL TEXAS IS NORMALLY DOMINATED BY A
RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE ALOFT...AND IS NORMALY HOT AND DRY.
AN UPPER LEVEL RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE TO THE NORTHWEST OF THE
REGION EXERTED ITS INFLUENCE DURING MUCH OF THE MONTH. A FEW
EXCEPTIONS TO THIS PATTERN OCCURRED...MOST NOTABLY LATE IN
THE MONTH.

IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH...THE UPPER LEVEL HIGH PRESSURE
SYSTEM RETRACTED A LITTLE FARTHER TO THE WEST. THIS SET UP
A NORTHERLY FLOW ALOFT INTO WEST CENTRAL TEXAS...AND
ALLOWED A WEAK COLD FRONT TO MOVE SOUTHWARD INTO THE
REGION ON THE 17TH BEFORE DISSIPATING. SCATTERED SHOWERS
AND THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPED AND MOVED SOUTH ACROSS THE AREA
DURING THE EARLY MORNING HOURS OF THE 18TH AND 19TH. RAINFALL
WAS GENERALLY LESS THAN ONE HALF INCH...BUT WIDELY SCATTERED
LOCATIONS RECEIVED AMOUNTS RANGING FROM A HALF TO OVER AN
INCH OF RAIN.

SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED ACROSS THE
SOUTHERN HALF OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS ON THE EVENING OF THE
22ND...AND THROUGHOUT THE REGION ON THE 23RD...AS AN UPPER
LEVEL DISTURBANCE MOVED INTO THE AREA FROM SOUTH-CENTRAL
TEAXAS. LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL ACCOMPANIED THE SHOWERS AND
STORMS. AMOUNTS GENERALLY VARIED UNDER AN INCH...BUT SOME
LOCATIONS RECEIVED ONE TO TWO INCHES.

IN JULY...COLD FRONTS USUALLY STALL OR DISSIPATE WELL TO THE
NORTH OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. LATE IN THE MONTH HOWEVER...A
SIGNIFICANT EXCEPTION OCCURRED. DURING THE EVENING AND EARLY
NIGHTTIME HOURS OF THE 24TH...A COLD FRONT MOVED SOUTHWARD
ACROSS WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. AN UNUSUALLY COOL AIRMASS SETTLED
INTO THE REGION ON THE 25TH AND 26TH...AND WAS ACCOMPANIED
BY CONSIDERABLE CLOUDCOVER. THIS HELD TEMPERATURES DOWN
WITH READINGS WELL BELOW NORMAL FOR LATE JULY. A NUMBER OF
COOL TEMPERATURE RECORDS WERE SET AT ABILENE AND SAN ANGELO.

AT ABILENE...THE HIGH TEMPERATURE ONLY REACHED 70 DEGREES ON
THE 25TH. THIS TIED THE RECORD LOW MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE FOR
THE ENTIRE MONTH OF JULY...WHICH WAS PREVIOUSLY SET ON FOUR
OTHER OCCASIONS. A NEW LOW (MINIMUM) TEMPERATURE RECORD WAS
SET AT ABILENE ON THE 25TH AND TIED ON THE 26TH.

AT SAN ANGELO...THE HIGH TEMPERATURE ONLY REACHED 72 DEGREES
ON THE 26TH. THIS TIED THE RECORD LOW MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE FOR
JULY...WHICH WAS PREVIOUSLY SET ON THREE OTHER OCCASIONS.

IN ADDITION TO THE COOL WEATHER...NUMEROUS SHOWERS AND
SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS WITH LOCALLY HEAVY RAIN OCCURRED
ACROSS VARIOUS PARTS OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS...FROM THE 23RD
THROUGH THE 29TH. SCATTERED LOCATIONS ACROSS MUCH OF WEST
CENTRAL TEXAS RECEIVED RAINFALL AMOUNTS RANGING FROM 3 TO 5.5
INCHES DURING THIS TIME FRAME...WITH A FEW HIGHER TOTALS. ONE
TO TWO INCH AMOUNTS OCCURRED AT OTHER SCATTERED LOCATIONS
THROUGHOUT WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. THE COVERAGE OF SHOWERS AND
STORMS WAS LEAST ACROSS THE WESTERN CONCHO VALLEY...NORTHERN
EDWARDS PLATEAU AND SOUTHERN HEARTLAND.
