...4TH WETTEST JANUARY ON RECORD AT ABILENE...

PRECIPITATION WAS WELL ABOVE NORMAL ACROSS MUCH OF WEST
CENTRAL TEXAS...ESPECIALLY EAST OF A LINE FROM OZONA TO
SAN ANGELO TO ABILENE TO THROCKMORTON. SAN ANGELO RECORDED
ITS 12TH WETTEST JANUARY. TEMPERATURES FOR THE MONTH
AVERAGED NEAR TO SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL.

AT ABILENE REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR
JANUARY WAS 42.8 DEGREES. THIS WAS 0.7 DEGREES BELOW THE
NORMAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 43.5 DEGREES. TOTAL
PRECIPITATION FOR JANUARY WAS 3.15 INCHES. THIS WAS 2.18
INCHES ABOVE THE MONTHLY NORMAL OF 0.97 INCHES. A TRACE OF
SNOWFALL WAS RECORDED IN ABILENE IN JANUARY.

AT SAN ANGELO REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE
FOR JANUARY WAS 45.1 DEGREES. THIS WAS 0.2 DEGREES ABOVE
THE NORMAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 44.9 DEGREES. TOTAL
PRECIPITATION FOR JANUARY WAS 2.16 INCHES. THIS WAS 1.34
INCHES ABOVE THE MONTHLY NORMAL OF 0.82 INCHES. A TRACE OF
SNOWFALL WAS RECORDED IN SAN ANGELO IN JANUARY.


JANUARY 2010 WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS...

AN ARCTIC COLD FRONT SWEPT SOUTH ACROSS WEST CENTRAL TEXAS
DURING THE OVERNIGHT HOURS OF THE 6TH AND 7TH...AND WAS
FOLLOWED BY THE COLDEST AIR OF THE SEASON TO DATE.

BY THE EARLY MORNING OF THE 7TH...TEMPERATURES HAD DROPPED
INTO THE UPPER TEENS TO LOWER 20S ACROSS THE NORTHERN HALF
OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS...AND WERE ACCOMPANIED BY GUSTY NORTH
WINDS. ABILENE RECORDED A PEAK WIND GUST OF 40 MPH ON THE
7TH. WIND CHILL VALUES AT SOME LOCATIONS...ESPECIALLY
ACROSS THE BIG COUNTRY...WERE NEAR OR BELOW ZERO. IN
ADDITION...PATCHY FREEZING RAIN AND SNOW OCCURRED ACROSS
PARTS OF THE BIG COUNTRY AND HEARTLAND. THIS CREATED SOME
SLICK SPOTS ON AREA ROADS. IN THE FOLLOWING COUPLE OF DAYS...
A STRONG HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM DEVELOPED SOUTH INTO TEXAS
FROM THE PLAINS STATES. THE COLDEST TEMPERATURES OCCURRED ON
THE 9TH...WHEN EARLY MORNING LOWS WERE IN THE 5 TO 15 DEGREE
RANGE. A RECORD LOW TEMPERATURE WAS SET AT SAN ANGELO.

THE COLD AIRMASS SLOWLY MODERATED ON THE 9TH AND 10TH.

A LIGHT RAIN EVENT OCCURRED MOSTLY ON THE 15TH...IN
ASSOCIATION WITH A STORM SYSTEM WHICH TRACKED FROM MEXICO
ACROSS SOUTH TEXAS. LIGHT RAIN SHOWERS OCCURRED ACROSS
THE SOUTHEASTERN HALF OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. RAINFALL
AMOUNTS OF ONE QUARTER TO ONE HALF INCH WERE COMMON
ACROSS THE NORTHERN EDWARDS PLATEAU...NORTHWEST HILL COUNTRY
AND SOUTHERN HEARTLAND. SCATTERED LOCATIONS RECEIVED ONE
HALF TO ONE INCH.

GUSTY SOUTHWEST TO WEST WINDS OCCURRED ON THE LATE AFTERNOON
AND EARLY EVENING HOURS OF THE 20TH...IN ASSOCIATION WITH
AN UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE AND PACIFIC FRONT WHICH MOVED
EAST ACROSS THE REGION. A PEAK WIND GUST OF 48 MPH WAS
RECORDED AT THE SAN ANGELO REGIONAL AIRPORT. WIDELY
SCATTERED SHOWERS AND A FEW THUNDERSTORMS ALSO OCCURRED
ACROSS THE AREA ROUGHLY SOUTHEAST OF A LINE FROM BALLINGER
TO ELDORADO. SMALL HAIL WAS REPORTED IN CHRISTOVAL.

WITH A SOUTHWESTERLY FLOW WELL OUT AHEAD OF AN APPROACHING
UPPER LEVEL STORM SYTSTEM...TEMPERATURES WARMED INTO THE
80S FOR HIGHS ACROSS WEST CENTRAL TEXAS ON THE 22ND. A
RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE WAS SET AT ABILENE AND TIED AT SAN
ANGELO.

AS A LARGE STORM SYSTEM MOVED INTO THE PLAINS STATES FROM
THE ROCKIES...A BAND OF RAIN SHOWERS OCCURRED ACROSS MUCH
OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS ON THE 23RD. SOME LOCATIONS ACOSSS
THE SOUTHERN BIG COUNTRY...NORTHERN AND WESTERN CONCHO
VALLEY...AND FAR NORTHERN CROCKETT COUNTY RECEIVED 1 TO 2
INCHES OF RAIN. FOR THE OTHER LOCATIONS ACROSS THIS SAME
AREA...THE AMOUNTS VARIED UNDER ONE INCH.

GUSTY WEST WINDS DEVELOPED BY THE EVENING OF THE 23TH.
PEAK WIND GUSTS INCLUDE 46 MPH AT SAN ANGELO AND 41 MPH AT
ABILENE. GUSTY WEST TO NORTHWEST WINDS ALSO OCCURRED ON THE
24TH. PEAK WIND GUSTS REACHED 41 MPH AT ABILENE...AND 40 MPH
AT JUNCTION.

WITH THE APPROACH OF A STORM SYSTEM FROM THE SOUTHWESTERN
STATES...SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS AFFECTED THE REGION ON
THE 28TH. SOME OF THE STORMS CONTAINED STRONG WINDS AND
WERE SEVERE. SOME WIND DAMAGE WAS REPORTED 15 MILES WEST OF
STERLING CITY...AND A ROOF WAS BLOWN OFF OF A MOTEL IN CROSS
PLAINS. IN THE TOWN OF COLEMAN...WIDESPREAD WIND DAMAGE WAS
REPORTED. THE STORMS CONTAINED VERY HEAVY RAINFALL...AND
STREET FLOODING WAS REPORTED IN HAMBY (JONES COUNTY). RAIN
CONTINUED INTO THE NIGHT OF THE 28TH.

FOR THIS PRECIPITATION EVENT...THE HIGHEST RAINFALL AMOUNTS
OF 3 TO 5 INCHES OCCURRED AT SCATTERED LOCATIONS ACROSS
EASTERN SECTIONS OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. AMOUNTS BETWEEN 1
AND 3 INCHES WERE COMMON ACROSS THE REST OF THE AREA EAST
AND NORTH OF A LINE FROM OZONA TO SAN ANGELO TO ABILENE.
DAILY RECORD RAINFALL AMOUNTS FOR THE 28TH WERE SET AT
ABILENE AND SAN ANGELO.

AS COLDER AIR INFILTRATED WEST CENTRAL TEXAS...SOME SLEET
AND LIGHT SNOW OCCURRED DURING THE POST-MIDNIGHT AND
EARLY MORNING HOURS OF THE 29TH. THE SNOW AND SLEET
ACCUMULATIONS WERE LESS THAN ONE INCH.
