Snow Across the Great Lakes, Central Appalachians, and Northeast; Unsettled Weather in the West

Light to moderate snow will continue into Saturday over the Great Lakes, Central Appalachians, and Northeast. This weekend into next week, a series of atmospheric rivers will bring gusty winds, periods of heavy rain, and mountain snow to northern California and the Pacific Northwest. ...JANUARY BROUGHT COOLER AND SLIGHTLY WETTER THAN NORMAL 
CONDITIONS TO WEST CENTRAL TEXAS...

AT ABILENE REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR JANUARY WAS
41.8 DEGREES. THIS WAS 1.0 DEGREE BELOW THE NORMAL AVERAGE 
TEMPERATURE OF 42.8 DEGREES. THE TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR JANUARY AT
ABILENE WAS 1.07 INCHES. THIS WAS 0.04 INCH ABOVE THE NORMAL 
JANUARY PRECIPITATION OF 1.03 INCHES. 

AT SAN ANGELO REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR JANUARY
WAS 43.2 DEGREES. THIS WAS 0.5 DEGREE BELOW THE NORMAL AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE OF 43.7 DEGREES. TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR JANUARY AT SAN
ANGELO WAS 1.29 INCHES. THIS WAS 0.49 INCH ABOVE THE NORMAL 
JANUARY PRECIPITATION OF 0.80 INCH.     


...JANUARY 2001 WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS...

A FEW UPPER LEVEL WEATHER SYSTEMS BROUGHT WINTRY PRECIPITATION TO 
WEST CENTRAL TEXAS DURING THE MONTH. THE BIG COUNTRY...CONCHO VALLEY
AND HEARTLAND WERE THE AREAS MOST AFFECTED. 

AN UPPER LEVEL WEATHER DISTURBANCE BROUGHT SOME LIGHT WINTRY 
PRECIPITATION LATE ON THE FIRST AND SECOND OF THE MONTH. A MIX OF 
FREEZING DRIZZLE AND LIGHT SNOW OCCURRED. ALTHOUGH SNOW 
ACCUMULATIONS WERE LESS THAN ONE INCH...THE COMBINATION OF THE 
FREEZING DRIZZLE AND SNOW CREATED SLICK ROADWAYS. 
 
AN UPPER LEVEL STORM SYSTEM BROUGHT ONE QUARTER TO ONE HALF INCH OF 
RAIN TO WEST CENTRAL TEXAS ON THE 10TH. 

ANOTHER UPPER LEVEL STORM AFFECTED THE REGION FROM THE 16TH INTO THE
18TH. AREAS OF FOG...LIGHT RAIN AND DRIZZLE OCCURRED ON THE 16TH AND
17TH. SOME FREEZING DRIZZLE OCCURRED ON THE NIGHT OF THE 17TH ACROSS
THE NORTHERN HALF OF THE REGION. THIS WAS FOLLOWED BY A MIX OF LIGHT
RAIN AND LIGHT SNOW ON THE 18TH...AS COLDER AIR INFILTRATED THE 
REGION. SNOW ACCUMULATIONS WERE LESS THAN ONE INCH. 

THE LAST UPPER LEVEL STORM SYSTEM OF THE MONTH BROUGHT A VARIETY OF 
PRECIPITATION TO THE REGION ON THE 27TH AND 28TH. RAIN...DRIZZLE AND
FOG OCCURRED DURING MOST OF THIS TIME. ONE TWO INCHES OF RAIN FELL
OVER THE NORTHERN BIG COUNTRY...WHILE ELSEWHERE THE AMOUNTS WERE 
GENERALLY ONE HALF TO ONE INCH. AS COLDER AIR MOVED INTO WEST 
CENTRAL TEXAS LATE ON THE 28TH...THE RAIN MIXED WITH SLEET AND SNOW.
SNOW ACCUMULATIONS UP TO ONE INCH OCCURRED ACROSS STERLING AND NOLAN
COUNTIES. 

AS THIS STORM SYSTEM DEPARTED...STRONG GUSTY WEST WINDS OCCURRED 
ACROSS THE REGION ON THE 29TH. SUSTAINED WIND SPEEDS OF 25 TO 35 MPH
WERE COMMON...WITH GUSTS OVER 40 MPH. SAN ANGELO RECORDED A PEAK 
WIND GUST OF 53 MPH...WITH 41 MPH RECORED AT ABILENE.
