Light to moderate snow will continue into Saturday over the Great Lakes, Central Appalachians, and Northeast. This weekend into next week, a series of atmospheric rivers will bring gusty winds, periods of heavy rain, and mountain snow to northern California and the Pacific Northwest. FEBRUARY 2010 WEATHER SUMMARY FOR WEST-CENTRAL TEXAS

...9TH COLDEST FEBRUARY ON RECORD AT ABILENE...
...10TH COLDEST FEBRUARY ON RECORD TIED AT SAN ANGELO...

PRECIPITATION WAS ABOVE NORMAL ACROSS MOST OF WEST CENTRAL
TEXAS IN FEBRUARY. THE MAIN EXCEPTION WAS ACROSS PARTS OF THE
NORTHERN EDWARDS PLATEAU...AND IN A FEW SMALL POCKETS OF THE
BIG COUNTRY...SOUTHERN HEARTLAND AND NORTHWEST HILL COUNTRY.
FOR SOME LOCATIONS ACROSS THE NORTHERN CONCHO VALLEY AND BIG
COUNTRY...THE MONTHLY AMOUNTS WERE WELL ABOVE NORMAL.

TEMPERATURES AVERAGED WELL BELOW NORMAL FOR THE MONTH.

AT ABILENE REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR
FEBRUARY WAS 41.7 DEGREES. THIS WAS 6.9 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 48.6 DEGREES. THIS MARKS THE 9TH COLDEST
FEBRUARY ON RECORD AT ABILENE. TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR FEBRUARY
WAS 2.18 INCHES. THIS WAS 1.05 INCHES ABOVE THE MONTHLY NORMAL
OF 1.13 INCHES. ABILENE RECORDED A TOTAL OF 7.0 INCHES OF
SNOWFALL IN FEBRUARY. THIS MARKS THE 3RD GREATEST FEBRUARY
SNOWFALL TOTAL ON RECORD AT ABILENE.

AT SAN ANGELO REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR
FEBRUARY WAS 45.3 DEGREES. THIS WAS 4.4 DEGREES BELOW THE
NORMAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 49.7 DEGREES. THIS MARKS A
3-WAY TIE FOR THE 10TH COLDEST FEBRUARY ON RECORD AT SAN ANGELO.
TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR FEBRUARY WAS 2.72 INCHES. THIS WAS 1.54
INCHES ABOVE THE MONTHLY NORMAL OF 1.18 INCHES. SAN ANGELO
RECORDED A TOTAL OF 4.0 INCHES OF SNOWFALL IN FEBRUARY.

FEBRUARY 2010 WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS...

A FAIRLY COLD AND WET WEATHER PATTERN PREVAILED DURING THE
EARLY PART OF THE MONTH. WITH THE APPROACH OF A STORM
SYSTEM FROM THE SOUTHWESTERN STATES AND MEXICO...WIDESPREAD
RAIN OCCURRED ACROSS WEST CENTRAL TEXAS ON THE 3RD.
RAINFALL AMOUNTS BETWEEN ONE HALF AND 1.5 INCHES WERE
COMMON ACROSS THE REGION...WITH LESS THAN ONE HALF INCH IN
PARTS OF THE WESTERN CONCHO VALLEY AND CROCKETT COUNTY.
SCATTERED LOCATIONS RECEIVED OVER ONE HALF INCH. A RECORD
DAILY RAINFALL AMOUNT WAS SET AT SAN ANGELO.

FOG AND DRIZZLE OCCURRED ACROSS THE AREA ON THE 7TH WITH
LIGHT RAIN ON THE 8TH. ALTHOUGH A FEW LOCATIONS ACROSS THE
EASTERN HALF OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS RECEIVED RAINFALL AMOUNTS
BETWEEN ONE TENTH AND ONE HALF INCH...THE AMOUNTS WERE MOSTLY
LESS THAN ONE TENTH OF AN INCH.

A WINTER PRECIPTATION EVENT OCCURRED ON THE 11TH...AS A
POTENT UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE MOVED EAST INTO TEXAS FROM
THE SOUTHWESTERN STATES. THIS SYSTEM BROUGHT SNOW TO MUCH OF
THE NORTHERN HALF OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS...AND HEAVY SNOW
AFFECTED THE BIG COUNTRY. THE HEAVIEST SNOWFALL OF 4 TO 8
INCHES OCCURRED ACROSS MUCH OF THE BIG COUNTRY NORTHEAST OF
A LINE FROM ROBY TO BAIRD. AMOUNTS OF 1 TO 3 INCHES WERE
COMMON ACROSS THE SOUTHERN HALF OF THE BIG COUNTRY. IN
ABILENE...3 INCHES OF SNOWFALL WAS RECORDED. SOME SNOW ALSO
OCCURRED ACROSS THE NORTHERN CONCHO VALLEY AND NORTHERN
HEARTLAND...WITH AMOUNTS MOSTLY AN INCH OR LESS. SOME SLEET
OCCURRED ACROSS COLEMAN AND BROWN COUNTIES. THE PRECIPITATION
WAS A COLD RAIN ACROSS ROUGHLY THE SOUTHERN HALF OF WEST
CENTRAL TEXAS. WATER EQUIVALENT PRECIPITATION AMOUNTS OF ONE
QUARTER TO ONE HALF INCH WERE COMMON ACROSS MUCH OF WEST
CENTRAL TEXAS. SOME LOCATIONS ACROSS THE BIG COUNTRY...
HEARTLAND AND NORTHWEST HILL COUNTRY RECEIVED ONE HALF TO
THREE QUARTERS OF AN INCH.

THE WEATHER PATTERN WAS DRY AND MORE TRANQUIL DURING THE
MIDDLE OF THE MONTH...WITH A NORTH TO NORTHWEST FLOW ALOFT
OVER THE REGION. A COLD FRONTAL PASSAGE ON THE 14TH WAS
FOLLOWED BY FALLING TEMPERATURES AND GUSTY NORTH WINDS.

A SNOW EVENT OCCURRED ACROSS THE REGION ON THE 23RD. A
COLDER AIRMASS INVADED THE REGION AFTER A COLD FRONTAL
PASSAGE ON THE 21ST. AN UPPER LEVEL STORM SYSTEM MOVED
EAST INTO TEXAS FROM NEW MEXICO AND INTERACTED WITH THE
COLD AIR...AND BROUGHT WINTER PRECIPITATION TO WEST CENTRAL
TEXAS. SNOW DEVELOPED DURING THE OVERNIGHT HOURS OF THE 22ND
AND 23RD...AND CONTINUED THROUGH THE MORNING OF THE 23RD
BEFORE TAPERING OFF. THE HEAVIEST SNOWFALL...IN THE RANGE OF
4 TO 6 INCHES...OCCURRED ACROSS THE SOUTHERN BIG COUNTRY...
CONCHO VALLEY AND HEARTLAND. LESSER AMOUNTS OF 2 TO 4 INCHES
OCCURRED FARTHER NORTH IN THE BIG COUNTRY...AND FARTHER TO
THE SOUTH ACROSS PARTS OF THE NORTHERN EDWARDS PLATEAU AND
NORTHWEST HILL COUNTRY. MOST AREAS SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 10
RECEIVED LESS THAN 2 INCHES. THE SNOWFALL RESULTED IN
HAZARDOUS TRAVEL CONDITIONS ACROSS MUCH OF WEST CENTRAL
TEXAS. AFTER THE SKIES CLEARED...TEMPERATURES DROPPED INTO
THE UPPER TEENS TO LOWER 20S FOR EARLY MORNING LOWS ON THE
24TH.    

WITH THE APPROACH OF ANOTHER UPPER LEVEL STORM SYSTEM NEAR
THE END OF THE MONTH...RAIN SHOWERS OCCURRED ON THE LATE EVENING
AND EARLY NIGHTTIME HOURS OF THE 28TH.
