Powerful Storms to Impact the Western U.S. and Northern Plains

A strong, long-duration atmospheric river will bring excessive rainfall, flash flooding, and very strong winds to southwest Oregon and northwest California through Thursday. TEMPERATURES AVERAGED WELL ABOVE NORMAL FOR FEBRUARY WHILE
PRECIPITATION WAS WELL BELOW NORMAL. NEARLY ALL OF WEST
CENTRAL TEXAS RECEIVED LESS THAN HALF OF THE NORMAL FEBRUARY
PRECIPITATION. SCATTERED LOCATIONS RECEIVED LESS THAN 25
PERCENT OF THE NORMAL MONTHLY PRECIPITATION.

AT ABILENE REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR
FEBRUARY WAS 54.5 DEGREES. THIS WAS 5.9 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 48.6 DEGREES. THIS MARKS THE 8TH WARMEST
FEBRUARY ON RECORD AT ABILENE. TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR FEBRUARY
WAS 0.29 INCHES. THIS WAS 0.84 INCHES BELOW THE MONTHLY NORMAL
OF 1.13 INCHES.

AT SAN ANGELO REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR
FEBRUARY WAS 55.9 DEGREES. THIS WAS 6.2 DEGREES ABOVE THE
NORMAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 49.7 DEGREES. THIS MARKS THE 4TH
WARMEST FEBRUARY ON RECORD AT SAN ANGELO. TOTAL PRECIPITATION
FOR FEBRUARY WAS 0.48 INCHES. THIS WAS 0.70 INCHES BELOW THE
MONTHLY NORMAL OF 1.18 INCHES.


FEBRUARY 2009 WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS...

HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEMS WITH RATHER DRY AIRMASSES OCCUPIED THE
REGION DURING DURING THE MONTH. WITH MOSTLY CLEAR SKIES...
LARGE TEMPERATURE SWINGS (MORE THAN 35 DEGREES) BETWEEN THE
DAYTIME HIGHS AND NIGHTTIME LOWS OCCURRED ON A NUMBER OF DAYS
DURING THE MONTH.

GUSTY SOUTHEAST TO SOUTH WINDS OCCURRED ON THE 8TH...OUT AHEAD
OF AN APPROACHING STRONG UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE FROM THE
SOUTHWESTERN STATES. PEAK WIND GUSTS REACHED 46 MPH IN ABILENE
AND 43 MPH IN JUNCTION. WITH THE ARRIVAL OF THE UPPER LEVEL
DISTURBANCE...A LINE OF STRONG THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPED AND
MOVED EAST ACROSS WEST CENTRAL TEXAS...FROM THE LATE EVENING
OF THE 8TH INTO THE EARLY MORNING HOURS OF THE 9TH. PEAK WIND
GUSTS FROM THIS LINE OF STORMS REACHED 53 MPH AT ABILENE AND
43 MPH AT SAN ANGELO. SOME ADDITIONAL RAINFALL OCCURRED
BEHIND THE LEADING LINE OF STORMS. SCATTERED POCKETS ACROSS
CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN SECTIONS OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS RECEIVED
ONE HALF TO ONE INCH OF RAINFALL. A LARGER PART OF THE AREA
RECEIVED QUARTER TO HALF INCH AMOUNTS.

A VERY POTENT UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE MOVED INTO THE REGION
FROM THE SOUTHERN ROCKIES ON THE 10TH. SCATTERED STRONG TO
SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED ON THE EVENING OF THE 10TH ACROSS
EASTERN SECTIONS OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS...AS A COLD FRONT
PUSHED EAST ACROSS THE AREA. WIND DAMAGE WAS REPORTED (ROOF
BLOWN OFF OF A BARN) 3 MILES WEST OF PLACID (MCCULLOCH COUNTY).
A WIND GUST TO 60 MPH WAS REPORTED 3 MILES SOUTH OF BROWNOOD.
IN ADDITION...QUARTER SIZE HAIL WAS REPORTED 4 MILES NORTHWEST
OF BRADY. WHERE THE STORMS OCCURRED...THE RAINFALL AMOUNTS
WERE MOSTLY LESS THAN ONE QUARTER OF AN INCH. OUTSIDE OF THE
STORMS...STRONG GUSTY WEST TO NORTHWEST WINDS ALSO OCCURRED
ACROSS A LARGER PART OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. PEAK WIND GUSTS
INCLUDED 55 MPH AT SAN ANGELO AND 52 MPH AT ABILENE AND
JUNCTION. THESE STRONG WINDS DOWNED SEVERAL POWER LINES IN
ABILENE...AND DOWNED SOME TREES IN SAN ANGELO.

A STRONG COLD FRONT PUSHED SOUTH ACROSS WEST CENTRAL TEXAS ON
THE MORNING OF THE 21ST. GUSTY NORTH WINDS OCCURRED WITH THIS
FRONTAL PASSAGE. PEAK WIND GUSTS REACHED 48 MPH IN ABILENE AND
46 MPH IN SAN ANGELO. TEMPERATURES DIPPED INTO THE UPPER TEENS
TO LOWER 20S FOR LOWS ACROSS MUCH OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS...ON
THE EARLY MORNING OF THE 22ND.

LATE IN THE MONTH...UNSEASONABLY WARM TEMPERATURES OCCURRED ON
THE 24TH...25TH AND 26TH. TEMPERATURES SOARED INTO THE UPPER
80S AND 90S ON THESE DAYS. ON THE 26TH...THE HIGH OF 96 DEGREES
AT SAN ANGELO SET A RECORD FOR THE DATE...AND WAS JUST ONE
DEGREE BELOW THE RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR THE ENTIRE MONTH
OF FEBRUARY. THE HIGH OF 93 DEGREES AT ABILENE WAS A RECORD
HIGH FOR THE DATE...AND WAS ALSO JUST ONE DEGREE BELOW THE
RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY.
