Powerful Storms to Impact the Western U.S. and Northern Plains

A strong, long-duration atmospheric river will bring excessive rainfall, flash flooding, and very strong winds to southwest Oregon and northwest California through Thursday. ...PRECIPITATION WAS WELL BELOW NORMAL ACROSS WEST CENTRAL TEXAS
IN DECEMBER...

TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR DECEMBER WAS LESS THAN ONE TENTH OF AN
INCH ACROSS MUCH OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. A FEW LOCATIONS RECEIVED
AROUND ONE QUARTER OF AN INCH. TEMPERATURES AVERAGED NEAR NORMAL 
FOR THE MONTH.

AT ABILENE REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR DECEMBER 
WAS 45.0 DEGREES. THIS WAS 0.4 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL AVERAGE 
TEMPERATURE OF 45.4 DEGREES. TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR ABILENE IN 
DECEMBER WAS JUST 0.11 INCHES. THIS WAS 1.16 INCHES BELOW THE MONTHLY 
NORMAL OF 1.27 INCHES. 

AT SAN ANGELO REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR 
DECEMBER WAS 46.6 DEGREES. THIS WAS 0.2 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL 
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 46.4 DEGREES. TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR SAN 
ANGELO IN DECEMBER WAS ONLY 0.02 INCHES. THIS WAS 0.92 INCHES  BELOW 
THE MONTHLY NORMAL OF 0.94 INCHES. 


DECEMBER 2005 WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS...

EARLY IN THE MONTH...UNSEASONABLY WARM TEMPERATURES WERE EXPERIENCED
ON THE 2ND AND 3RD. RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURES (IN THE UPPER 80S) 
WERE REACHED AT ABILENE AND SAN ANGELO. WITH THE COMBINATION OF WARM
AIR...GUSTY SOUTHWEST TO WEST WINDS AND VERY DRY AIR...A COUPLE OF
GRASS FIRES OCCURRED IN THE REGION (NEAR POTOSI AND JUST NORTHWEST 
OF SAN ANGELO).

FOLLOWING PASSAGE OF AN ARCTIC COLD FRONT...A VERY COLD AIRMASS 
SETTLED INTO THE REGION. LOW TEMPERATURES ACROSS THE AREA WERE IN THE 
TEENS ON THE 8TH AND 9TH. RECORD LOWS WERE REACHED AT SAN ANGELO ON 
THE 7TH...8TH...AND 9TH...AND AT ABILENE ON THE 8TH. ABILENE ALSO SET 
A RECORD COLD HIGH TEMPERATURE OF 27 DEGREES ON THE 7TH.

UNSEASONABLY WARM TEMPERATURES ALSO OCCURRED LATE IN THE MONTH...
DURING THE WEEK BETWEEN CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEARS DAY. RECORD HIGHS
WERE REACHED IN ABILENE ON THE 26TH AND 27TH...AND IN SAN ANGELO ON
THE 26TH.

WITH RATHER DRY AIRMASSES SITUATED OVER THE REGION DURING DECEMBER...
PRECIPITATION WAS QUITE LIGHT AND ONLY OCCURRED ON A FEW OCCASIONS.
