A strong, long-duration atmospheric river will bring excessive rainfall, flash flooding, and very strong winds to southwest Oregon and northwest California through Thursday. PRECIPITATION FOR AUGUST VARIED CONSIDERABLY ACROSS WEST 
CENTRAL TEXAS...FROM BELOW NORMAL TO WELL ABOVE NORMAL. THE
RAINFALL FOR THE MONTH WAS BELOW NORMAL ACROSS SECTIONS OF THE
BIG COUNTRY AND NORTHERN EDWARDS PLATEAU. WELL ABOVE NORMAL
AMOUNTS OCCURRED ACROSS PARTS OF THE SOUTHERN BIG COUNTRY AND
NORTHERN CONCHO VALLEY...AND ACROSS SCATTERED PARTS OF THE 
HEARTLAND AND NORTHWEST HILL COUNTRY.

TEMPERATURES FOR THE MONTH AVERAGED NEAR TO SLIGHTLY BELOW
NORMAL. THE NUMBER OF DAYS IN AUGUST WHERE HIGH TEMPERATURES 
REACHED 100 DEGREES OR MORE INCLUDE 5 AT ABILENE...7 AT SAN 
ANGELO...AND 5 AT JUNCTION. 

AT ABILENE REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR AUGUST
WAS 80.4 DEGREES. THIS WAS 2.2 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE OF 82.6 DEGREES. TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR AUGUST WAS
6.31 INCHES. THIS WAS 3.68 INCHES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 2.63 
INCHES. THIS MARKS THE 10TH WETTEST AUGUST ON RECORD FOR ABILENE.

AT SAN ANGELO REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR
AUGUST WAS 81.2 DEGREES. THIS WAS 0.1 DEGREES BELOW THE NORMAL
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 81.3 DEGREES. TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR
AUGUST WAS 3.59 INCHES. THIS WAS 1.54 INCHES ABOVE THE MONTHLY
NORMAL OF 2.05 INCHES. 


AUGUST 2008 WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS...

DURING MUCH OF THE FIRST HALF OF THE MONTH...WITH THE
INFLUENCE OF A HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM ALOFT...TEMPERATURES
WERE ABOVE NORMAL ACROSS WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. 

A DISTURBANCE ALOFT BROUGHT SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS TO 
AREAS OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS ON THE 1ST. A FEW STRONG 
STORMS OCCURRED...AND A A 54 MPH WIND GUST WAS RECORDED 
AT THE ABILENE REGIONAL AIRPORT. THE SHOWERS AND STORMS 
WERE MOST NUMEROUS BETWEEN INTERSTATES 20 AND 10...AND TO 
THE NORTHWEST OF A LINE FROM ENDORADO TO RICHLAND SPRINGS.
SCATTERED LOCATIONS RECEIVED RAINFALL AMOUNTS BETWEEN
ONE HALF AND 1.5 INCHES.

TROPICAL STORM EDOUARD MADE LANDFALL ON THE UPPER TEXAS
COAST ON THE EARLY MORNING OF THE 5TH. ON THE 6TH...THE 
REMMANTS OF EDOUARD TRACKED NORTHWESTWARD FROM CENTRAL 
TEXAS ACROSS THE BIG COUNTRY. THIS SYSTEM BROUGHT A 
CONCENTRATED AREA OF HEAVY RAINFALL TO A SMALL PART OF
CENTRAL TEXAS...BETWEEN BROWNWOOD AND HAMILTON...ON THE
EARLY MORNING OF THE 6TH. RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 1.5 TO 3
INCHES OCCURRED ACROSS EASTERN BROWN COUNTY...WITH 
HIGHER AMOUNTS EAST OF BROWN COUNTY. WITH THE MOISTURE 
INCREASE WHICH ACCOMPANIED THE REMNANTS OF EDOUARD...
SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED ACROSS WEST 
CENTRAL TEXAS ON THE 6TH. RAINFALL AMOUNTS FROM THESE 
SCATTERED SHOWERS AND STORMS WAS MOSTLY IN THE RANGE OF 
ONE HALF TO ONE INCH...BUT A FEW LOCATIONS RECEIVED OVER 
AN INCH.    

ON THE 7TH...WIDELY SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS
OCCURRED ACROSS THE NORTHERN BIG COUNTRY. A FEW 
LOCATIONS RECEIVED ONE HALF TO ONE INCH OF RAINFALL.

DURING THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH...A CHANGE IN THE PATTERN
OCCURRED...WITH THE HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM ALOFT BREAKING
DOWN. THIS ALLOWED A COLD FRONT TO ARRIVE ON THE WEEKEND 
OF THE 16TH AND 17TH. DURING MUCH OF THE SECOND HALF OF 
THE MONTH...THE INFLUENCE OF UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCES AND
RELATIVELY MOIST AIRMASS BROUGHT SHOWERS AND STORMS ON A
NUMBER OF DAYS. WITH THE PRESENCE OF CLOUD COVER AND 
PRECIPITATION...TEMPERATURES WERE CONFINED TO THE 70S FOR
HIGHS AT ABILENE ON THE 16TH...17TH...AND 19TH...AND AT SAN
ANGELO ON THE 17TH. A RECORD COOL MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 70 
DEGREES WAS SET AT ABILENE ON THE 17TH. AT SAN ANGELO...A
RECORD COOL MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 75 DEGREES WAS SET ON 
THE 17TH.    

AT ABILENE...SOME OF THE HIGHER DAILY RAINFALL TOTALS 
DURING THE SECOND HALF OF AUGUST INCLUDE 2.15 INCHES ON
THE 16TH...1.55 INCHES ON THE 17TH...AND 1.07 INCHES ON
THE 19TH. FOR SAN ANGELO...A FEW OF THE HIGHER DAILY 
RAINFALL TOTALS INCLUDE 0.67 INCHES ON THE 16TH...0.74 
INCHES ON THE 17TH...AND 0.73 INCHES ON THE 23RD. JUNCTION
