AUGUST 2007 WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS...

DURING THE FIRST TWO DAYS OF THE MONTH...WITH THE COMBINATION OF AN
UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE AND A VERY MOIST AIRMASS IN THE REGION...
SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WITH VERY HEAVY RAINFALL OCCURRED ACROSS
THE NORTHWESTERN CONCHO VALLEY AND BIG COUNTRY. SOME LOCATIONS
ACROSS THE NORTHWESTERN CONCHO VALLEY RECEIVED 1 TO 2 INCHES OF
RAIN...WHILE SCATTERED LOCATIONS ACROSS THE BIG COUNTRY RECEIVED
BETWEEN 1 AND 3 INCHES. A FEW LOCATIONS IN THE BIG COUNTRY...MAINLY
SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 20...RECEIVED OVER 3 INCHES OF RAINFALL. THIS
HEAVY RAINFALL FLOODED NUMEROUS ROADS ACROSS THE BIG COUNTRY. A
ROAD JUST SOUTH OF STERLING CITY WAS ALSO FLOODED.

A SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN THE PATTERN OCCURRED DURING THE EARLY PART
OF AUGUST. A HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM ALOFT...WHICH HAD BEEN PRESENT IN
OTHER PARTS OF THE COUNTRY EARLIER IN THE SUMMER...EXPANDED IN
COVERAGE ACROSS THE SOUTHERN PLAINS AND TEXAS. THIS PATTERN CHANGE
BROUGHT MUCH WARMER AND DRIER CONDITIONS TO WEST CENTRAL TEXAS.

* FLASH FLOODING EPISODE WITH THE REMNANTS OF TROPICAL STORM ERIN *

A SIGNIFICANT FLASH FLOODING EPISODE OCCURRED IN WEST CENTRAL TEXAS
DURING THE MIDDLE OF AUGUST...AS THE REMNANTS OF TROPICAL STORM ERIN
TRACKED ACROSS THE REGION.

TROPICAL STORM ERIN MADE LANDFALL ALONG THE LOWER TEXAS COAST ON THE
16TH. THE REMNANTS OF THIS SYSTEM (A TROPICAL DEPRESSION) TRACKED
NORTHWEST ACROSS THE SOUTH-CENTRAL PART OF TEXAS AND...AND INTO
SOUTHERN CROCKETT COUNTY BY THE EARLY MORNING OF THE 17TH. THE
AIRMASS BECAME VERY MOIST ACROSS WEST CENTRAL TEXAS AS THIS TROPICAL
DEPRESSION ENTERED THE REGION. WIDESPREAD COVERAGE OF SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED ACROSS MUCH OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. THE SHOWERS
AND STORMS PERSISTED ACROSS SOME AREAS...DUE TO THE SLOW MOVEMENT OF
THE REMNANTS OF ERIN. THIS RESULTED IN EXCESSIVE RAINFALL AND FLASH
FLOODING. THE REMNANTS OF ERIN TRACKED SLOWLY NORTH INTO NORTHWESTERN
TEXAS ON THE 18TH.

TOTAL RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 4 TO 7 INCHES...WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS...
OCCURRED ACROSS MUCH OF THE REGION TO THE WEST OF A LINE FROM HASKELL
TO ABILENE TO FORT MCKAVETT TO SONORA. THIS WIDESPREAD VERY HEAVY
RAINFALL CAUSED FLASH FLOODING OF STREETS IN SAN ANGELO AND ABILENE.
NUMEROUS ROADS ACROSS WEST-CENTRAL TEXAS WERE ALSO FLOODED AT TIMES.

FLOODING ALSO OCCURRED ALONG SOME OF THE AREA OF RIVERS AND CREEKS.
MODERATE FLOODING OCCURRED ALONG THE SOUTH CONCHO RIVER AT CHRISTOVAL...
AND FLOODING ALSO OCCURRED ON THE ELM CREEK AT BALLINGER. ALONG THE
CLEAR FORK OF THE BRAZOS RIVER...MINOR FLOODING OCCURRED AT NUGENT
WHILE MODERATE FLOODING OCCURRED AT FORT GRIFFIN.

IN THE BIG COUNTRY...SIGNIFICANT FLOODING OCCURRED ALONG ELM CREEK...
ESPECIALLY ACROSS THE ABILENE AREA. THE EXCESSIVE RAINFALL CAUSED WATER
TO OVERFLOW THE SPILLWAY AT LAKE ABILENE AND FLOW DOWNSTREAM INTO ELM
CREEK. THIS AGGRAVATED THE FLOODING ALONG ELM CREEK.

THE EXTENT OF THE FLOODING IN ABILENE NECESSITATED THE EVACUATION OF
HOMES IN THE NORTHWESTERN PART OF THE CITY...ESPECIALLY ACROSS THE AREA
SURROUNDING ELM CREEK.

FLOODWATERS ENTERED HOMES AROUND THE COMMUNITIES OF MERKEL...ABILENE...
BUFFALO GAP...HAMLIN...LAKE ABILENE...FORT PHANTOM HILL LAKE...AND
ROSCOE.

IN ADDITION...THE EXCESSIVE RAINFALL AND RUNOFF LED TO SIGNIFICANT
RISES IN OAK CREEK RESERVOIR AND LAKE SWEETWATER.

DURING THE LATE PART OF THE MONTH...NO MAJOR WEATHER SYSTEMS AFFECTED
THE REGION. WIDELY SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED FROM
THE 29TH THROUGH THE 31ST. TEMPERATURES WERE WITHIN A FEW DEGREES OF
NORMAL DURING THIS TIME.
