TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR AUGUST WAS 7.07 INCHES. THIS WAS 4.44 INCHES BELOW THE NORMAL OF 2.63 INCHES. THIS MARKS THE 4TH WETTEST AUGUST ON RECORD FOR ABILENE. SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WITH VERY HEAVY RAINFALL OCCURRED ACROSS THE NORTHWESTERN CONCHO VALLEY AND BIG COUNTRY. THIS PATTERN CHANGE BROUGHT MUCH WARMER AND DRIER CONDITIONS TO WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. * FLASH FLOODING EPISODE WITH THE REMNANTS OF TROPICAL STORM ERIN * A SIGNIFICANT FLASH FLOODING EPISODE OCCURRED IN WEST CENTRAL TEXAS DURING THE MIDDLE OF AUGUST...AS THE REMNANTS OF TROPICAL STORM ERIN TRACKED ACROSS THE REGION. TROPICAL STORM ERIN MADE LANDFALL ALONG THE LOWER TEXAS COAST ON THE 16TH. THE REMNANTS OF THIS SYSTEM (A TROPICAL DEPRESSION) TRACKED NORTHWEST ACROSS THE SOUTH-CENTRAL PART OF TEXAS AND...AND INTO SOUTHERN CROCKETT COUNTY BY THE EARLY MORNING OF THE 17TH. THE AIRMASS BECAME VERY MOIST ACROSS WEST CENTRAL TEXAS AS THIS TROPICAL DEPRESSION ENTERED THE REGION. WIDESPREAD COVERAGE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED ACROSS MUCH OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS. THE SHOWERS AND STORMS PERSISTED ACROSS SOME AREAS...DUE TO THE SLOW MOVEMENT OF THE REMNANTS OF ERIN. THIS RESULTED IN EXCESSIVE RAINFALL AND FLASH FLOODING. THE REMNANTS OF ERIN TRACKED SLOWLY NORTH INTO NORTHWESTERN TEXAS ON THE 18TH. TOTAL RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 4 TO 7 INCHES...WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS... OCCURRED ACROSS MUCH OF THE REGION TO THE WEST OF A LINE FROM HASKELL TO ABILENE TO FORT MCKAVETT TO SONORA. THIS WIDESPREAD VERY HEAVY RAINFALL CAUSED FLASH FLOODING OF STREETS IN SAN ANGELO AND ABILENE. NUMEROUS ROADS ACROSS WEST-CENTRAL TEXAS WERE ALSO FLOODED AT TIMES. FLOODING ALSO OCCURRED ALONG SOME OF THE AREA OF RIVERS AND CREEKS. MODERATE FLOODING OCCURRED ALONG THE SOUTH CONCHO RIVER AT CHRISTOVAL... AND FLOODING ALSO OCCURRED ON THE ELM CREEK AT BALLINGER. ALONG THE CLEAR FORK OF THE BRAZOS RIVER...MINOR FLOODING OCCURRED AT NUGENT WHILE MODERATE FLOODING OCCURRED AT FORT GRIFFIN. IN THE BIG COUNTRY...SIGNIFICANT FLOODING OCCURRED ALONG ELM CREEK... ESPECIALLY ACROSS THE ABILENE AREA. THE EXCESSIVE RAINFALL CAUSED WATER TO OVERFLOW THE SPILLWAY AT LAKE ABILENE AND FLOW DOWNSTREAM INTO ELM CREEK. THIS AGGRAVATED THE FLOODING ALONG ELM CREEK. THE EXTENT OF THE FLOODING IN ABILENE NECESSITATED THE EVACUATION OF HOMES IN THE NORTHWESTERN PART OF THE CITY...ESPECIALLY ACROSS THE AREA SURROUNDING ELM CREEK. FLOODWATERS ENTERED HOMES AROUND THE COMMUNITIES OF MERKEL...ABILENE... BUFFALO GAP...HAMLIN...LAKE ABILENE...FORT PHANTOM HILL LAKE...AND ROSCOE. IN ADDITION...THE EXCESSIVE RAINFALL AND RUNOFF LED TO SIGNIFICANT RISES IN OAK CREEK RESERVOIR AND LAKE SWEETWATER. DURING THE LATE PART OF THE MONTH...NO MAJOR WEATHER SYSTEMS AFFECTED THE REGION. WIDELY SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED FROM THE 29TH THROUGH THE 31ST. TEMPERATURES WERE WITHIN A FEW DEGREES OF NORMAL DURING THIS TIME. $$
