A strong, long-duration atmospheric river will bring excessive rainfall, flash flooding, and very strong winds to southwest Oregon and northwest California through Thursday. CONDITIONS IN AUGUST...

AT ABILENE REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR AUGUST
WAS 83.6 DEGREES. THIS WAS 1.0 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL AVERAGE
TEMPERATURE OF 82.6 DEGREES. TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR ABILENE IN
AUGUST WAS 1.07 INCHES. THIS WAS 1.56 INCHES BELOW THE MONTHLY 
NORMAL OF 2.63 INCHES.  

AT SAN ANGELO REGIONAL AIRPORT...THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE FOR 
AUGUST WAS 84.6 DEGREES. THIS WAS 3.3 DEGREES ABOVE THE NORMAL 
AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 81.3 DEGREES. TOTAL PRECIPITATION FOR 
SAN ANGELO IN AUGUST WAS 0.41 INCHES. THIS WAS 1.64 INCHES BELOW 
THE MONTHLY NORMAL OF 2.05 INCHES.  


...AUGUST 2002 WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS...

WEATHER MORE TYPICAL OF SUMMER RETURNED TO WEST CENTRAL 
TEXAS IN AUGUST. AN UPPER LEVEL HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM DOMINATED 
THROUGH MOST OF THE MONTH...BRINGING HOTTER AND DRIER CONDITIONS. 
RAINFALL COVERAGE WAS SPOTTY...AND NUMEROUS LOCATIONS RECEIVED 
LESS THAN ONE INCH OF RAIN FOR THE MONTH. THE NUMBER OF DAYS 
WHERE HIGH TEMPERATURES REACHED 100 DEGREES OR MORE INCLUDE 
2 AT ABILENE...5 AT SAN ANGELO...AND 4 AT JUNCTION.     

SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OCCURRED IN PARTS OF WEST 
CENTRAL TEXAS ON A FEW DAYS IN THE EARLY PART OF AUGUST. 

THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH WAS MARKED BY AN ACTIVE WEATHER EPISODE. 
SCATTERED SEVERE STORMS OCCURRED IN THE BIG COUNTRY ON THE EVENING
OF THE 13TH. SEVERAL LOCATIONS REPORTED DIME TO QUARTER SIZE HAIL.
A THUNDERSTORM COMPLEX MOVED SOUTHWARD OUT OF THE BIG COUNTRY 
AND ACROSS THE CONCHO VALLEY AND WESTERN HEARTLAND...BY MIDNIGHT 
OF THE 14TH. SCATTERED LOCATIONS RECEIVED RAINFALL AMOUNTS RANGING 
FROM 2 TO 4 INCHES.  

A METEOROLOGICALLY RARE HEATBURST EVENT OCCURRED IN THE SAN 
ANGELO AREA IN THE HOURS JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT OF THE 14TH...AS THIS 
THUNDERSTORM COMPLEX DISSIPATED. THE HEATBURST WAS ACCOMPANIED BY A 
RAPID TEMPERATURE RISE...A SUDDEN DROP IN RELATIVE HUMIDITY...
STRONG GUSTY WINDS AND A FALL IN PRESSURE. A PEAK WIND GUST OF 53 
MPH WAS RECORDED AT THE SAN ANGELO REGIONAL AIRPORT. THE STRONG 
WINDS DOWNED TREE LIMBS IN SAN ANGELO AND MERTZON...AND CAUSED 
OTHER WIND DAMAGE IN SAN ANGELO.

LATE IN THE MONTH...A THUNDERSTORM COMPLEX MOVED RAPIDLY SOUTH
ACROSS MUCH OF WEST CENTRAL TEXAS ON THE EARLY MORNING HOURS OF 
THE 29TH. THIS STORM COMPLEX WAS ACCOMPANIED BY STRONG GUSTY 
WINDS OF 40 TO 50 MPH.
