New Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador in the ArkLaTex | ||||
The National Weather Service in Shreveport, Louisiana, is proud to announce that Sci-port Discovery Center is now a Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador: Over the years, Sci-port Discovery Center has often teamed up with the National Weather Service on many projects from hosting storm spotter training classes, helping local teachers infuse weather into their science classes, and educating the public on historic weather events like "Remembering Hurricane Katrina." Sci-port has been an ambassador for NOAA for many years through engaging the public in the study of our oceans and atmosphere, thus designating Sci-port as a NOAA Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador was only a naming process based on past observance through partnership. The goal of the National Weather Service's Weather-Ready Nation initiative is increasing the nation's weather-readiness so that the country will be better prepared to protect, mitigate, and respond to and recover from weather-related disasters. The ultimate goal is to save lives and property; one of the core missions of the National Weather Service. The NWS works towards this goal by working together with other government agencies, emergency managers, researchers, the media, the insurance industry, non-profits, the private sector, and many others. The Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador initiative is an effort to formally recognize NOAA partners who are improving the nation's readiness against extreme weather, water, and climate events. As a Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador, Sci-Port will work with the National Weather Service to strengthen the area's resilience against extreme weather by taking a leadership role in educating the public on weather hazards and promoting weather awareness activities in the community.
