NWS Shreveport Will Host GiRLS GLOW 3.0 Open House on March 23, 2019

Women make up nearly half of our country's workforce, but only about 25 percent are employed in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields. In the National Weather Service, the numbers are even lower, with women only comprising about 14 percent of NWS meteorologists.

On Saturday, March 23, 2019, from 1pm to 4pm, NWS-Shreveport will host an open house which aims to encourage girls to explore careers in STEM fields, which are some of the highest-paying career fields in the job market today. This event also coincides with Women’s History Month.

The event will feature hands-on weather and science activities, informational booths dealing with careers in emergency management, NWS hydrology and meteorology programs, military weather, broadcast meteorology, electronics, as well as guided office tours and a weather balloon launch. Several female professionals in the various fields represented will serve as positive examples of success in these often male-dominated career areas.

Also featuring, a special appearance by Owlie Skywarn!
