GENERAL SUMMARY:

               Naval Pacific Meteorology and Oceanography
Facility is located on the second deck of BLDG 516,
NA5 North Island Operations building, which is near
the center of the land area comprising North Island
and the city of Coronado. North Island is the
northern extremity of the peninsula which forms San
Diego Bay. The peninsula is approximately 13 miles
lonq and the Coronado-North Island area is
approximately 3 x 11 miles. The Bay varies from
less than 1 mile in width in the channel to over 3
miles in the South Bay. Lindbergh Field is across
the Bay, 2.1 miles north of the Facility.

A ridge of hills 400 feet high extends from
Point Loma, which is 316 miles southeast of the
facility, northward to about 3.6 miles north-
northwest of the facility. To the northeast,
exclusive of the city areas, the land is typical
desert/gully/mesa/hill type terrain which rises to
an elevation of 1000 feet approximately 18 miles
inland, thence abruptly to the laguna Mountain range
40 to 50 miles east of San Dieqo. The station is
exposed to the Pacific Ocean from the southeast
throuqh the southwest, approximately 2000 feet east
of the approach end of runway 29 and is oriented
parallel to the centerline of the runway with a
baseline of 400 feet. Semi-automatic weather
station AN/GMQ-29 and UMQ-5C are located on the pad
500 feet south of runway 11/29, 300 feet west of
taxiway 8, and 400 feet east of runway 18/36. The
GMQ-32 is located south of runway 29, approximately
1500 feet from the east end and 500 feet from the
          centerline of the runway.
