CAMP PENDLETON MCAS (NFG) LAT 33 18N LONG 117 21W ELEV 00075(ft) 00023(m) TYPE NAVY SMOS V3 16031995 PERIOD OF RECORD 1966-1993 GENERAL SUMMARY: Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California occupies some 125,000 acres of land and is located along the Pacific Coast approximately half way between the cities of San Diego and Los Angeles. The Air Facility is located in the southwest section of the base approximately five miles east of the coast. The Pacific Ocean provides cool summers and warm winters and the relative humidity remains within the human comfort range. The base does not experience the heavy smog conditions common to urban areas to the north and south. The high incidence of night and early morning low stratus and fog especially during the winter months is the primary source of unfavorable flying conditions. It tends to remain along the immediate coast rather than moving inland. Fog stratus during the winter months is much more unpredictable and can seriously hamper low-level flying. A sea breeze is experienced almost every day of the year. Land breezes and drainage winds are experienced but are considered to be negligible because of low speeds and variable directions. Autumn and winter Santa Ana winds do affect the base but the high surface winds associated with this phenomena are rarely experienced. During Santa Ana conditions fire stations at the 4000 foot level have reported gusts up to 60 knots while at the same time winds at the airfield were less than 15 knots. The uneven terrain over most of the base does not allow for any real funnel effect. Rainfall at Camp Pendleton is heaviest during the winter months particularly late November through early February. Rainfall amounts increase inland at higher elevations. This is also true of convective type precipitation during the summer months. Most thunderstorm activity is restricted to inland areas of higher elevations but the occasional storm does stray to the coastal section of the base. Destructive weather conditions, while possible, are not considered a serious threat in this area. -------------------------------------------------------------- Percent Frequency Daily PRECIPITATION AMOUNTS OF DAYS NO.
