Safety Bullets

  • Always check to ensure campfires are allowed where you are staying before burning
  • Ensure fires are allowed during the time that you are staying
  • Virginia bans fires before 4PM February 15th through April 30th
  • West Virginia bans fires between 7AM and 5PM each day from March 1st through May 31st, as well as, October 1st through December 31st
  • Only burn within fire rings and/or designated fire areas
  • Put out fires if changes in wind direction and/or speed occur
  • Avoid having a fire during prolonged period of dry weather
  • Always have water and a shovel nearby when a campfire is active
  • Fully put-out any fire you start -- You should be able to safely touch where your fire was, otherwise it is still not fully put-out
  • Know evacuation routes out of a camp area/park incase a campfire turns into a wildfire
