Overview
Hurricane Michael made landfall as a strong Category 4 storm along the Florida panhandle on Wednesday afternoon October 10th, then tracked northeastward with the northern portion of the storm circulation tracking across Southside, VA Thursday afternoon, October 11th. The deep flow of tropical moisture into the Appalachians and central mid Atlantic region ahead of the storm began to generate excessive rainfall across portions of the region mainly along the Interstate 77 corridor as early as Wednesday evening.
As the storm circulation approached late Wednesday night, a cold front moving in from the west interacted with the storm and enhanced rainfall especially southeast of Interstate 81. Widespread rainfall amounts of 4 to 8 inches were reported, along with local amounts over 10 inches, mainly from the mountains of NC up through Southside VA. This resulted in significant flash flooding with flash flood emergencies issued for Roanoke city/county and southern Pittsylvania county including the city of Danville.
The massive volume of water then generated rapid rises on area rivers, including the New, Roanoke, and Dan. Major flooding was reported at several river gauge locations along with several record crests.
In addition, as the northern portion of the storm circulation moved across Southside VA, bands of deep convection developed and mixed strong winds down to the surface. Many trees were blown down in the water-logged soil, especially from Rockingham and Caswell counties of NC up through Pittsylvania, Halifax and Charlotte counties of VA. Despite reports of tornado sightings, damage surveys revealed no conclusive evidence of tornadic circulations and judged the damage was caused by straight line winds.
Here is a track animation of Michael.
Here are a few general summary images including a visible satellite image of Michael at the time of landfall, a map of the rainfall totals, the rainfall totals across our area, and an example of the flooding. More imagery showing radar animations,3-day rainfall totals for Michael including tropical rain just ahead of the storm, and an example of major river flooding on the Dan River. Additional information about river stages, more photos of flooding impacts, wind gusts, and more can be found by clicking the other tabs.

Radar:
Left-hand image is a regional radar image at around the time of landfall on the Florida Gulf coast. It shows the area of rain well to the north of the main system moving into the Carolinas and southern Appalachians. The right-hand image is a local radar animation from early on October 10th to late that evening when a majority of the heavy rain and flash flooding occurred in our area.

Rivers
Two to as much as 11 inches of rain fell from Michael over a 3-day period (see the Rainfall tab for analyses and list of some readings). This sent several rivers in our area into major to record flood stages. The following images are hydrographs from our various river gauges that did flood, showing how high each site got. These are all in the Dan River, Roanoke River, and New River basins.

Rain Reports
Rain was the big story for much of the region. Here is the 3-day rainfall which includes rainfall as Michael moved across North Carolina as well as tropical rainfall that spread well out ahead of Michael before the center of circulation passed through. Most of this rainfall, especially in the Piedmont areas, did occur on October 10th however. A text listing of rainfall reports for the Blacksburg NWS area follows the images.
