Overview
Hurricane Florence made landfall along the North Carolina coast on Friday morning, Sept. 14, and after slowly tracking westward through South Carolina, the remnants of Florence did not reach western North Carolina until Sunday evening, Sept. 16, but began accelerating again by that time. The track of the remnant circulation through the southern Appalachians resulted in heavy rain and flooding, and at least one landslide, over a large part of the NWS Blacksburg forecast area, with especially heavy rain along portions of the Blue Ridge due to enhanced upslope easterly flow. The slow initial movement across the eastern Carolinas brought extreme rainfall and flooding to those locations (well over 30 inches within a couple of days), but likely played a role in reducing the rainfall amounts in the Appalachians from what could have occurred had the system moved more directly across the mountains. In addition to the heavy rain and flooding, gusty winds (although below tropical storm force) combined with saturated ground to cause numerous uprooted trees and some scattered power outages.
Here is a track animation of Florence from the National Hurricane Center, from when it first developed off the coast of Africa on August 31 to when it was downgraded to a tropical depression on September 16 after making landfall in the southeast U.S. on the 14th.
Here are a few other images to summarize the path (via satellite), the rainfall totals across our area, and an example of the flooding. More imagery showing radar animations, rainfall, impacts on some area rivers, photos of impacts, and more can be found in the other tabs.

Radar:
Left hand image is a regional radar loop from around the time of landfall to after the remnants moved through the Appalachians, and shows the bands of heaviest rains remaining situated over eastern North and South Carolina for several days. The right hand image is a more local radar view from early evening on the 16th until about midnight, when a majority of the flash flooding began in our area.

Rivers
Two to as much as 11 inches of rain fell from Florence over a 3-day period (see the Rainfall tab for analyses and list of some readings). This sent several rivers in our area into minor to moderate flood stages. The following images are hydrographs from our various river gauges that did flood, showing how high each site got. These are all in the Dan River, Roanoke River, and New River basins.
Dan River at Danville, VA crested close to 23 feet September 18th, 2018 | Dan River at South Boston, Va crested just over 27 feet September 20th, 2018 |
Dan River at Wentworth, NC crested just under the 25 foot moderate flood stage, September 18th, 2018 |
Roanoke River at Roanoke, VA crested just below 12 feet which is the moderate flood stage September 17th, 2018 |
New River at Galax, VA crested just over 10 feet (minor flood), September 17th, 2018 | Little River at Graysontown, VA crested near 8 1/2 feet which is minor flooding, September 17th, 2018 | New River at Radford, VA crested around 16.5 feet which is moderate flooding September 17th, 2018 |

Rain Reports
Rain was the big story for much of the region. Here are three rainfall graphics from Florence. The first for our area, then for the state of North Carolina courtesy of NWS Raleigh, and also one from NWS Greenville-Spartanburg, SC. Note that the exact time periods for the rainfall totals for each image is slightly different and may explain some slight differences. A text listing of rainfall reports for the Blacksburg NWS area follows the images.
