Strong Storm Impacting the Gulf of Alaska; Record-Breaking Heat Expected This Weekend Across the Southwest

A strong system tracking eastward across the southern Bering Sea will move into the north central Gulf of Alaska this weekend producing snow squalls, storm-force winds and moderate to heavy rain. Record-breaking high temperatures are forecast this weekend across the Desert Southwest into the central and southern Plains. NWS Riverton Product Service Change Notification (SCN) Page:

The NWS Riverton, WY office will issue Air Quality Alerts (AQA) text product for Wildfire Smoke on behalf of Wyoming
Health Department, Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality, and Air Quality Division when any of the following
conditions are met: 

  1.  Level 3 Smoke - Heavy Smoke is forecast by Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) (Forecast Issued
    10:30-11:30 AM Monday-Friday, June through September), or
  2.  Equipment Monitors reach 25 ug/m^3 hourly concentrations for PM2.5 (Anytime), or
  3.  Localized on-the-ground smoke is observed (Anytime)

The NWS Riverton text product will be sent under the AQARIW identifier. The proposal for the AQARIW text product will be for
Wyoming Forecast Zones, which will include WY-001 through WY-020 and WY-022 through WY-030.

The following message is transmitted on behalf of the Wyoming Department of
Environmental Quality, Air Quality Division and the Wyoming Department of Health.

WHAT...Air Quality Alert for Wildfire Smoke


WHERE...Big Horn, Hot Springs, Fremont, Johnson, Lincoln, Natrona, Park, Sublette,
Sweetwater, Teton, and Washakie counties.


WHEN...Until NOON MDT Friday September 20.


IMPACTS...Smoke from wildfires in other states continues to be observed across much of western
and central Wyoming. The smoke is limiting visibilities and is expected to remain at least through Friday.

HEALTH INFORMATION...The Wyoming Department of Health recommends the elderly, young
children, and individuals with respiratory problems avoid excessive physical exertion and
minimize outdoor activities during this time. Wildfire smoke is made up of a variety of pollutants,
including particulate matter and ozone, which can cause respiratory health effects. Although
these people are most susceptible to health impacts, the Department of Health also advises that
everyone should avoid prolonged exposure to poor air quality conditions.


CURRENT CONDITIONS...The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality, Air Quality
Division offers near real-time air quality data from Wyoming's monitoring stations and provides health
