Decision Support, Collaboration, and Innovation

Please join the National Weather Service as we bring together the Southwest US aviation and weather forecasting communities to promote aviation safety and productivity through improved weather awareness and forecasting services. This event will be free of charge and will consist of:

  • Aviation Weather Forecasting Workshop (Friday, November 5, 2021) - The first day of the workshop will focus on meeting the needs of Aviation Weather Forecasters. It will feature best practices in aviation weather forecasting, infusing new technology into the forecast process, customer needs, and discussions on weather service innovation. Pilots are welcome on this day to the extent they would like to participate, and we will appreciate their insights in discussions. We also anticipate FAA Safety Team participation.

  • Dinner and Keynote Address (Friday evening) - Everyone with an interest in southwest US aviation and aviation weather services is welcome to join us for a casual evening of networking and relationship building. After a social hour in the bar, we will enjoy a private fajita buffet ($30 including tax) and a Keynote Address from the FAA's 2019 CFI of the Year, Gary "GPS" The Guy in the Pink Shirt" Reeves. Feel free to bring a spouse or other guests.

  • Aviator and Controller Weather Workshop (Saturday, November 6, 2021) - The second day of the workshop will focus on meeting aviator and air traffic controller needs for weather safety information, including presentations on aviation weather hazard recognition, mitigation, and avoidance; as well as tips on how to effectively use and understand aviation weather data, products, and websites. The FAAST Program Manager is offering up to six WINGS credits for participation on this day, and one additional credit for participation in Friday evening's dinner ($30) and Keynote Address.

Hotel accommodations are available at Sheraton Albuquerque Uptown. The deadline to receive the US Government per diem rate has passed. See the Registration & Hotel tab for more information. The Albuquerque Meals and Incidentals Rate is $71 per day.  There are numerous dining and shopping options within walking distance of the hotel and conference center, so a rental car will not be needed. Taxi fare from/to the Albuquerque International Sunport should cost about $25 one way.

The SAWS 9 Workshop is brought to you by the Albuquerque Air Route Traffic Control Center Weather Service Unit, as well as the National Weather Service Forecast Offices in Albuquerque, Phoenix, and El Paso.  Please monitor our website (https://www.weather.gov/psr/saws9) for updates, and feel free to email us at sr.saws.workshop@noaa.gov if you have questions.
