Light to moderate snow will continue into Saturday over the Great Lakes, Central Appalachians, and Northeast. This weekend into next week, a series of atmospheric rivers will bring gusty winds, periods of heavy rain, and mountain snow to northern California and the Pacific Northwest. A major winter storm affected the mid-Atlantic on January 31 through February 2, 2021. Low pressure over the Midwest and Ohio Valley gradually moved eastward towards the Atlantic coast on the 31st. This caused overrunning precipitation to overspread the mid-Atlantic, which fell mainly in the form of snow initially. With time, warm air advection both at the surface and aloft caused precipitation to change to rain and sleet from south to north, with the rain-snow line at least temporarily overspreading most but not quite all of the area. Heading into February 1, strong secondary low pressure development occurred just off the mid-Atlantic coast. After a lull, this redevelopment caused a renewed shield of heavy precipitation to develop across the area, especially along and northwest of the I-95 corridor. This fell mainly in the form of snow, and led to several hours of snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour, and locally 3 to 4 inches per hour in a particularly heavy band. Through the day, the heaviest band of precipitation slowly pushed southeast towards the coast. As it did so, colder air slowly filtered in as well, causing precipitation to change back to sleet then snow in areas that had previously changed to rain. However, it was the areas which remained as mostly snow for the duration of the event that saw the highest totals. The totals were quite impressive, with a widespread 1 to 2 feet of snow and locally higher amounts along and especially northwest of the I-95 corridor north of Philadelphia. Winds were also fairly strong across the area, especially near the coast, and some minor to moderate coastal flooding also occurred. The strong coastal low slowly departed the area to the northeast by February 2, bringing an end to the long duration, major winter storm, which would be the region’s most significant of the 2020-2021 winter.
