Back-to-back powerful Pacific storm systems to impact the Pacific Northwest and northern California through the end of this week with heavy rain, flooding, strong winds, and higher elevation mountain snow. A strong, long-duration atmospheric river will accompany the Pacific storms, bringing excessive rainfall and flash flooding to southwest Oregon and northwest California through the week. Read More >
Overview
A moist and unusually unstable environment was in place on 6 July 2020. By midday, MLCAPE values exceeded 3000 J/kg with minimal convective inhibition as strong insolation occurred during the morning hours. Convection initiated just northwest of Philadelphia shortly after noon. With weak steering flow and a very buoyant low-level thermodynamic environment, updrafts rapidly deepened, generating severe, slow-moving thunderstorms. Additionally, outflow from the storms initiated subsequent convection in such a way that a long period of training occurred on the north and northwest side of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. With intense rain rates of 3+ inches per hour, rainfall accumulations of 3-6 inches occurred within a 2-hour period in southeast Montgomery and northern Philadelphia Counties. Severe flash flooding resulted, with dozens of vehicles stranded in water and multiple creeks and streams flooding within an hour. Additionally, the storms produced hail up to golf ball size in northern Philadelphia, Bucks, and Mercer Counties. With marginal deep-layer vertical shear but very steep low-level lapse rates, convective outflow spread from the initial storms in an annular pattern, initiating new convection that continued to spread out in this pattern through the afternoon. Widespread reports of wind damage and hail occurred with these storms, and isolated instances of flash flooding were reported where localized training developed. Morristown, New Jersey, was particularly hard hit, with several reports of wind damage and road closures from flash flooding. Eventually, more organized convection developed in Delmarva during the evening hours, with a bowing structure producing numerous reports of wind damage in eastern Maryland into far southwest Delaware. |

Philadelphia-Trenton Area Severe Storms
Figure 1: KDIX radar cross-section of the storm which produced large hail over Lower Bucks and southern Mercer counties valid at 1745 UTC 6 July 2020. 60dBz values can be seen at the 40,000 foot level, indicative of an extremely intense updraft. Due to its proximity to the radar, the highest available elevation with data for this storm at the time was around 45,000 feet. Reflectivity values well in excess of 50 dBz can be seen at that level. | Figure 2: KDIX radar reflectivity factor (top left), correlation coefficient (CC; top right), differential reflectivity (ZDR; bottom left), and vertically integrated liquid (VIL; bottom right) for the 0.8 degree elevation angle valid at 1801 UTC 6 July 2020. This is taken about 15 minutes after the cross-section in Figure 1, as the core of the storm was collapsing downward. At this time, the 0.8 degree angle was scanning only about 1700 feet above the surface. The reduced values of CC and ZDR are indicative of large hailstones, with a large area of off the scale VIL values also strongly supportive of large hail. Hail up to golf ball size was reported near Robbinsville. | Figure 3: KDIX radar reflectivity for the 0.4 degree elevation angle valid at 1816 UTC 6 July 2020. This time was notable for the especially symmetrical outflow emanating from the main cluster of thunderstorms, as well as the lone severe storm over the Pocono region which developed independently of the storms to the south. Interaction with a sea breeze boundary was also helping initiate the thunderstorms over eastern New Jersey. |
Middlesex County Severe Storm
Figure 4: KDIX radar cross-section of the storm which produced large hail over Middlesex County, near Edison and Metuchen, valid at 1918 UTC 6 July 2020. The white pixels represent 70dBz values at around the 20,000 foot level, which combined with values in excess of 50 dBZ at over 40,000 feet elevation are indicative of an intense updraft. The updraft can be seen tilting to the east with height. | Figure 5: Same as Figure 2 for the 1.3 degree elevation angle valid at 1919 UTC 6 July 2020. This is taken near the time of the cross-section in Figure 4, at which time the core of the storm was already descending. At this time, the 1.3 degree angle was scanning about 5500 feet above the surface. Large hail up to ping pong ball size was reported very soon after near Edison. The reduced values of CC and ZDR are indicative of large spherical hailstones. High VIL values are also present, usually associated with large hail. |
Delmarva Severe Storms
Figure 6: KDOX radar reflectivity factor (top left), storm relative velocity (SRM; top right), spectrum width (SW; bottom left), and correlation coefficient (CC; bottom right) valid at 2319 UTC on 6 July 2020, shortly before a tornado warning was issued for this storm. A velocity couplet is present in the SRM data, indicating rotation. Elevated SW values are also present, indicative of turbulent flow which is usually found in tornadic circulations. | Figure 7: Same as Figure 6 valid at 2332 UTC on 6 July 2020. At this time, a velocity couplet is still present, but the magnitude of rotation has weakened considerably. SW values have also decreased, and the reflectivity is taking on a bowing segment pattern which indicates continued potential for straight line wind damage, but a lesser risk of a tornado. This storm did produce considerable straight line wind damage, but no evidence of a tornado was found. |
Flash Flooding
Figure 8: Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) 6 hour radar estimated rainfall valid at 2000 UTC on 6 July 2020. A bullseye of rainfall estimates to near 5 inches can be seen over Northeast Philadelphia. This led to severe flash flooding. A comparison of radar estimates to observations revealed that radar generally did a good job estimating rainfall for this event. | Figure 9: MRMS 12 hour radar estimated rainfall valid at 0200 UTC on 7 July 2020. While most of the area received measurable rain, the amounts varied widely from place to place. In addition to the flash flooding in Northeast Philadelphia, flash flooding was reported near Morristown, NJ, Ocean City, NJ, and Reading, PA. |
