Light to moderate snow will continue into Saturday over the Great Lakes, Central Appalachians, and Northeast. This weekend into next week, a series of atmospheric rivers will bring gusty winds, periods of heavy rain, and mountain snow to northern California and the Pacific Northwest. Colder temperatures are in store for the weekend from the Great Lakes to East Coast. Read More >
Overview
A midlevel speed maximum moved from the upper Ohio Valley to the northern Mid-Atlantic on the morning of 3 June 2020. The downstream environment was anomalously moist and unstable. Storms quickly developed in the lee of Lake Erie during the early morning hours, aided by focused lift from a remnant mesoscale convective vortex originating from the northern Plains the previous day. With strong vertical wind shear and increasing instability downstream as diurnal heating commenced, the convection quickly organized and began producing scattered wind damage in central Pennsylvania. By late morning, an intense rear-inflow jet developed with the mesoscale convective system, and more widespread and significant wind damage began to occur in a swath from Berks County through the Philadelphia metropolitan area to the Ocean County coast. Several observations of 60-80 mph wind gusts were observed with the storms, with a couple reports exceeding 90 mph on the coast. The storms moved quickly offshore by early afternoon, allowing the region to destabilize again. More storms initiated by late afternoon in central Pennsylvania and intensified as they moved into southeast Pennsylvania, near and just south of the midday storms' path. A narrower but still significant swath of wind damage occurred from southern Berks and northern Chester Counties through the southern portions of the Philadelphia metropolitan area to the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. In total, over 250 reports of wind damage were collected by the National Weather Service (likely a mere sample of the widespread damage that occurred), with hundreds of thousands of customers without power in southeast Pennsylvania and central/southern New Jersey for hours to days afterward. Sadly, four fatalities occurred as the midday derecho moved through the region. |

A DERECHO, DEFINED AS A LONG-LIVED AND EXPANSIVE THUNDERSTORM WIND COMPLEX THAT PRODUCES WIDESPREAD SWATHS OF DAMAGING AND OFTEN SIGNIFICANT WIND GUSTS OVER A PATH GREATER THAN 240 MILES IN LENGTH, DEVELOPED JUST SOUTHEAST OF LAKE ERIE DURING THE EARLY MORNING HOURS OF JUNE 3, 2020. DAMAGING WINDS IN EXCESS OF 60 MPH WERE SPORADIC IN WESTERN AND CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA, BUT AS THE THUNDERSTORM COMPLEX MOVED INTO INCREASINGLY UNSTABLE AIR IN THE EASTERN PART OF THE STATE JUST BEFORE NOON, WIND DAMAGE REPORTS BECAME MORE NUMEROUS AND WIDESPREAD. BY THE TIME THE DERECHO MOVED OFF THE COAST AROUND 130 PM, OVER 250 WIND DAMAGE REPORTS WERE RECEIVED BY THIS OFFICE FROM EMERGENCY MANAGERS, TRAINED SKYWARN SPOTTERS, AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC. MOST OF THESE REPORTS WERE LOCATED WITHIN A 50-MILE WIDE SWATH EXTENDING FROM BERKS COUNTY EASTWARD TO THE PHILADELPHIA METRO AREA, THEN FURTHER EAST TO THE OCEAN COUNTY SHORELINE IN NEW JERSEY. WIND GUST REPORTS BETWEEN 60 AND 70 MPH WERE COMMON, WITH SOME OF THE HIGHEST GUSTS AS FOLLOWS: 93 MPH AT BEACH HAVEN, NJ (OCEAN COUNTY), 92 MPH AT SURF CITY, NJ (OCEAN COUNTY), 83 MPH AT READING REGIONAL AIRPORT, PA (BERKS COUNTY), 76 MPH IN POTTSTOWN, PA (MONTGOMERY COUNTY), AND 76 MPH IN BRIELLE, NJ (MONMOUTH COUNTY). IN ADDITION TO DESTRUCTIVE WIND GUSTS, FREQUENT TO CONTINUOUS LIGHTNING AND HEAVY DOWNPOURS WERE ALSO EXPERIENCED THROUGHOUT THE AREA. TRAGICALLY, FOUR DEATHS WERE REPORTED IN THE NWS MOUNT HOLLY AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY FROM THIS DERECHO. THREE FATALITIES IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY WERE DUE DIRECTLY TO FALLING TREES, WITH THE FOURTH FATALITY IN DELAWARE COUNTY DUE TO A HOUSE FIRE CAUSED BY AN ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTION FROM A FALLEN TREE. THIS IS THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF FATALITIES FROM A DERECHO EVENT IN THE AREA SINCE 1950. BECAUSE THIS DERECHO MOVED OFF THE COAST BY 200 PM, THE WARM AFTERNOON SUN WAS ABLE TO SUFFICIENTLY DESTABILIZE THE ATMOSPHERE FOR THE FORMATION OF ANOTHER ROUND OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS OVER SOME OF THE SAME AREAS WHICH EXPERIENCED THEM EARLIER IN THE DAY. REPORTED WIND GUSTS ASSOCIATED WITH THESE THUNDERSTORMS GENERALLY RANGED BETWEEN 45 AND 65 MPH, WITH A 68 MPH WIND GUST MEASURED AT THE PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. THE REMAINING THUNDERSTORMS THEN MOVED OFFSHORE BY 1000 PM, WHICH BROUGHT AN END TO THE DAY’S SEVERE WEATHER. $$
Midday Derecho
Figure 1: KDIX radar reflectivity factor (top left), radial velocity (V; top right), differential reflectivity (ZDR; bottom left), and correlation coefficient (CC; bottom right) valid at 1535 UTC on 3 June 2020. A progressive mesoscale convective system (MCS) has moved into western portions of the NWS Mount Holly county warning area. Radar is indicating a strong rear-inflow jet (RIJ) has developed within the MCS, with 70+ kt radial velocities observed behind the leading convective line. These high velocities are observed right up to the strongest convection. This is a strong indication that the winds attendant to the RIJ will efficiently descend to the surface rather than spread out well behind the leading convection. Observations throughout the derecho's life cycle suggest very strong wind gusts occurred within about 5 minutes, with winds becoming very light quickly thereafter. At this time, an 83-mph wind gust was observed at Reading Regional Airport. | Figure 2: Same as Fig. 1, valid at 1600 UTC on 3 June 2020. Radar continues to indicate an elongated and strong RIJ upstream of the convection. Note that the leading convective line is beginning to show stronger signs of bowing, which is common along the axis of the RIJ. The strongest surface winds are typically observed near the apex of the bow, and the swath of wind damage reports confirms this was the case for this event. A trained spotter reported a 76-mph wind gust in Pottstown at this time. | Figure 3: Same as Fig. 1, valid at 1625 UTC on 3 June 2020. Radar continues to indicate that bowing is increasing along the leading convective line. Note also the reasonably consistent sharp gradient between no precipitation ahead of the leading convective line and high radar reflectivity factors within the convective line. This is indicative of continued development of strong updrafts and maintenance of the overall system. Wind gusts of 60-70 mph were reported in the Philadelphia area around this time, including at Northeast Philadelphia Airport and Philadelphia International Airport. |
Figure 4: Same as Fig. 1, valid at 1631 UTC on 3 June 2020. This is valid around the time of a 76-mph wind gust in Delran, NJ. Radar continues to show an intense RIJ, but the zone of stronger winds appears to be narrowing. This is not actually the case but is rather a characteristic of radar sampling. Radars sample the radial wind (which is the speed of any observed echoes in the direction of the radar pulse itself). A radar's pulse is sent straight out from the radar in all directions from the radar. In this case, the apex of the bow echo is headed roughly for the radar, so we continue to observe very strong winds near the bow itself. However, severe wind gusts are occurring in about a 25-50 mile swath either side of the apex of the bow. The problem is the radar is sampling these velocities obliquely (i.e., the radar is not pointing directly to the direction of the wind along these portions of the line). The result is that the velocities appear much lower away from the apex of the bow, when in reality, the observed winds are much stronger. This characteristic becomes readily apparent in Fig. 5. | Figure 5: Same as Fig. 1, valid at 1650 UTC on 3 June 2020. Note that the strongest wind gusts are measured very close to (just west of) the radar itself (the small black circle in eastern New Jersey). At this time, the winds along the bow echo are mostly perpendicular to the radar pulses, except just west of the radar (since the winds are primarily west to east). Thus, the winds to the north and southwest along the leading convective line of the bow echo appear low on radar but remain severe in actuality. Several gusts of 60 to 70 mph were observed in Burlington, Ocean, and Monmouth Counties around this time. A power outage occurred at the radar just after this radar scan, which led to about a 10-15 minute window of no radar data from KDIX. | Figure 6: Same as Fig. 1, valid at 1715 UTC on 3 June 2020. The bow echo has reached the coast, and note that the strong (60-80 kt) radial velocities once again expand outward from the apex of the bow, since more and more of the squall line becomes increasingly parallel to the radar pulses. Note also the velocities along the leading convective line appear red (versus green and blue). This indicates that the radar echoes are moving away from (versus toward) the radar. Winds along the squall line remain west-to-east, which is now directed away from the radar. Numerous reports of 70-90 mph wind gusts were observed on the southern Monmouth and Ocean County coast around this time. |
Evening Severe Storms
Figure 7: KDIX radar reflectivity factor (top left), differential reflectivity (ZDR; top right), specific differential phase (KDP; bottom left), and correlation coefficient (CC; bottom right) valid at 2213 UTC on 3 June 2020. A cluster of severe thunderstorms had moved into Berks County from central Pennsylvania by this time. Several reports of wind damage were received from areas near Reading southeastward to the Chester County border near and subsequent to this radar scan. At this point, individual cells were still apparent from Lebanon County eastward into Berks County. Each storm was producing severe wind gusts, and small hail was also reported. | Figure 8: Same as Fig. 7, valid at 2255 UTC on 3 June 2020. The storms were beginning to congeal at this point, with bowing noted with the northeast storm (northern Chester County). Significant wind damage occurred in this area (especially in Malvern) during this phase of the event. | Figure 9: Same as Fig. 7, valid at 2320 UTC on 3 June 2020. A tornado warning was issued for the storm at this time. The "middle" storm became outflow-dominant and surged southeastward. This process strengthened rotation on the northern side of the surge, with a mesovortex clearly evident on radar (see Figs. 11 and 12). Strong wind gusts were occurring within the outflow surge, with numerous reports of wind damage in northeastern Chester and Delaware Counties. A 68-mph wind gust was reported at Philadelphia International Airport as the surge passed. Photos of the storm indicated strong rotation on the north side of the outflow surge at cloud base at this time (which passed over Center City). |
Figure 10: Same as Fig. 7, valid at 2340 UTC on 3 June 2020. The north-side mesovortex had weakened by this point, as the northern storm also began to become outflow-dominant. Straight-line wind damage occurred in much of western Camden and Gloucester Counties during this phase of the event. Weak reflectivity echoes on the rear side of the evolving storm cluster indicate a developing bow echo with the storm. Extensive damage was reported in Glendora, Hi-Nella, and Magnolia as this cluster of storms passed. | Figure 11: KDIX radar reflectivity factor (top left) and storm-relative motion (SRM; top right) valid at 2253 UTC on 3 June 2020 and at 2311 UTC on 3 June 2020 (bottom left and bottom right). This shows the evolution of the convective cluster as it approached Philadelphia in greater detail. The SRM indicates primarily a convergent wind pattern near the storm at 2253 UTC (consistent with the generation of upward motion in updrafts; motion toward the radar farther away from the radar versus away from the radar closer to it in northern Chester County). However, as the southern portion of the cluster surged, a rotational signature develops with the storm by 2311 UTC (motions toward the radar on the "left" side of the storm and away from the radar on the "right" side of the storm). | Figure 12: Same as Fig. 11, valid at 2319 UTC (top) and 2332 UTC (bottom). The rotational signature is still apparent with the storm at 2319 UTC but gradually becomes more consistent with a convergent signature again by 2332 UTC, as the storm moves into Camden and Gloucester Counties. |
