Light to moderate snow will continue into Saturday over the Great Lakes, Central Appalachians, and Northeast. This weekend into next week, a series of atmospheric rivers will bring gusty winds, periods of heavy rain, and mountain snow to northern California and the Pacific Northwest. Colder temperatures are in store for the weekend from the Great Lakes to East Coast. Read More >
Overview
An area of low pressure began to explosively intensify as it moved over the mid-Atlantic on 7 February 2020, with continued rapid strengthening occurring as the low moved northeast towards the Gulf of Maine. A warm front associated with the low pushed through the mid-Atlantic in the pre-dawn hours of 7 February, while a strong cold front approached by late morning. Ahead of the cold front, an unusually warm winter air mass overspread the mid-Atlantic. A small amount of surface-based instability developed ahead of the cold front. However, exceptionally strong wind fields were present ahead of the rapidly deepening low. Combined with the strong dynamic forcing and lift associated with the low, a line of convection developed over the mid-Atlantic early on 7 February and led to an anomalous wintertime severe weather outbreak. Storms were low topped and produced limited lightning, but acted to transport downward the strong winds present just above the surface. Widespread damaging wind gusts occurred as the storms moved through. In addition, an area of rotation within the squall line produced a brief tornado in Cecil County, MD. A couple of other tornadoes had previously formed further southwest in the WFO Baltimore/Washington CWA. The line of storms produced severe wind gusts all the way to the coast of New Jersey, before rapidly weakening as it moved further northeast and away from the already limited instability. |

Start Location...Elkton in Cecil County MD End Location...Elkton in Cecil County MD Date...February 7, 2020 Estimated Time...9:39 AM EST Maximum EF-Scale Rating...EF-1 Estimated Maximum Wind Speed...100 mph Maximum Path Width...600 yards Path Length...0.8 miles Beginning Lat/Lon...39.65/-75.82 Ending Lat/Lon...39.65/-75.80 * Fatalities...0 * Injuries...0 ...Summary... An EF-1 tornado briefly touched down near the Elk Mills Quarry in Cecil County, Maryland. The tornado uprooted and snapped numerous softwood trees just east and north of the quarry near the intersection of Elk Mills Road, Appleton Road, and Fletchwood Road. A few hardwood and softwood trees were uprooted on nearby residential properties. The tornado continued east along Fletchwood Road passing over some industrial buildings toward the Pine Hill Apartment complex. At the apartment complex, numerous pine trees were uprooted or snapped. The tornado then dissipated as it continued east away from the apartment complex. Thankfully, no significant structural damage occurred and no injuries or fatalities occurred as a result of this tornado. EF Scale: The Enhanced Fujita Scale classifies tornadoes into the following categories: EF0...Weak......65 to 85 mph EF1...Weak......86 to 110 mph EF2...Strong....111 to 135 mph EF3...Strong....136 to 165 mph EF4...Violent...166 to 200 mph EF5...Violent...>200 mph * The information in this statement is preliminary and subject to change pending final review of the event and publication in NWS Storm Data. $$
Notable Radar Imagery (GR2Analyst)
Figure 1: KDOX radar reflectivity factor for the 0.5 degree elevation angle valid at 1417 UTC 7 February 2020. At this time, severe convection was entering the WFO Mount Holly CWA. While the radar reflectivity was not overly impressive (typical of cold season convection), numerous upstream damage reports in the WFO Baltimore/Washington CWA increased forecaster confidence that severe winds were occurring with this convection, and warnings were issued accordingly. | Figure 2: KDIX radar reflectivity factor for the 0.5 degree elevation angle valid at 1515 UTC 7 February 2020, about an hour after Figure 1. Severe convection was now entering the Philadelphia metro area. Cold season convection is typically shallow, and this case was no exception. While some echoes over 50 to 55 dBz can be seen in this image scanning just a few thousand feet above ground level over most of the line, these storms were only about 15,000 feet tall. Deep convection in summertime often exceeds 40,000 feet in height. |
Figure 3: Same as Figure 2 valid at 1618 UTC 7 February 2020, about another hour later. By this time, convection was exiting the WFO Mount Holly CWA, and was also weakening as it moved away from the already marginal instability further west. Still, some damaging gusts occurred all the way to the New Jersey coast. | Figure 4: KDOX radar reflectivity factor (top left), storm relative velocity (SRM; top right), correlation coefficient (CC, bottom left) and spectrum width (SW; bottom right),) for the 0.5 degree elevation angle valid at 1436 UTC 7 February 2020. This was near the time a tornado touched down near Elk Mills. A velocity couplet is seen in the SRM data, with the reflectivity showing a “break” in the line sometimes associated with tornado formation. The enhanced SW values indicate turbulent flow often associated with tornadoes. |
Figure 5: KDOX radar reflectivity factor (left) and SRM (right) for the 0.5 degree elevation angle valid at 1436 UTC 7 February 2020. This is the same time as in Figure 4, and simply provides a somewhat broader perspective. An NWS storm survey team confirmed a small area of tornado damage when they surveyed the area that afternoon. As cold air rushed into the region behind the frontal system which produced the severe weather, the survey team experienced snow flurries while conducting their work. | Figure 6: KDIX base velocity data for the 0.5 degree elevation angle valid at 1517 UTC 7 February 2020, near the time of Figure 2. The bright greens over southeast PA, southern NJ, and northern DE represent radar estimated velocities of 50 to 65 kts (about 55 to 75 mph) at around 3000 to 5000 feet above the surface. The strong low level vertical motion associated with the shallow but intense convection was easily able to transfer wind gusts of 50 to 70 mph to the surface, producing widespread damage. |
