Gusty winds are expected from portions of the Mid-Atlantic into the Northeast through the night following the system that brought rain to the area. On 15 November 2018, a surface low developed on the East Coast downstream of a negatively-tilted and highly-amplified shortwave trough in the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys and in the right entrance region of a 250-mb jet streak in New England and the Canadian Maritimes. The low moved quickly northeastward along the coast to southern New England the following day. Preceding the low was a retreating surface high in New England, leading to cold northeasterly surface flow across the region. As the low to the south approached the area, large-scale lift generated widespread precipitation across the area beginning the morning of 15 November. Residual cold/dry air from the retreating surface high was poorly modeled, which led to precipitation developing somewhat later than expected and remaining snow or a wintry mix much longer than forecast for much of the area. Snow totals exceeded 6 inches in much of the area north of Interstate 78, with reports from Carbon and Monroe Counties reaching nearly a foot. Along the urban corridor, 2-5 inches of snow occurred before transition to a rain/sleet mix during the late afternoon and evening hours. Precipitation remained mainly rain near the New Jersey coast and in southern Delmarva. The coastal low featured two other impacts: winds and coastal flooding. As the low moved toward southern New England between midnight and daybreak on 16 November, strong west to northwest winds developed along the coast and offshore. Several reports of wind gusts exceeding 50 mph were received, leading to scattered power outages and sporadic wind damage. Finally, despite the unfavorable timing between the new and full moon, the storm surge in advance of the coastal low was very high (almost 3 feet), which led to minor to locally moderate coastal flooding on the northern and central New Jersey coast during the overnight high tide.

Also of note is the strong onshore flow depicted by BV (greens to the right; reds to the left -- indicating flow from east to west) and increasing BR along the precipitation axis near and north of the precipitation type transition zone. Snow was becoming heavier by this point. This was generally the peak of the snow event for the urban corridor and adjacent central New Jersey, with transition to sleet/rain in southern New Jersey and the Jersey Shore. BR continues to increase, indicating a heavy snow band had developed to the north of the transition zone. Accumulations of an inch per hour or locally higher were occurring at this time within the snow band. |

The transition zone had continued northward to the Interstate 195 corridor in New Jersey but had made little progress west of the Delaware River. This was likely a result of pronounced effects of surface inflow decelerating and shifting leftward (southward) as surface elevation increases to the west in eastern Pennsylvania.
