Overview

During the early morning hours of Wednesday December 16th of 2020, a strong low pressure system emerged off the east coast of GA and SC. Through the day, the system strengthened as it tracked up the East Coast. This setup brought moderate to at times heavy snow across the Middle Atlantic States. Banded heavy snowfall setup across western and southwestern Pennsylvania with some locations reporting up to 20 inches of snowfall. An area of warm air developed in the mid levels of the atmosphere which reduced snowfall totals in some WV counties such as Wetzel and Marion. The storm produced enough snow to set a new record for December 16th and also placed 5th for snowfall in a single calendar day for the entire month of December.
