Overview
A thunderstorm complex moved slowly southward across southeast Missouri and the Lower Ohio Valley during the day. Isolated reports of large hail and strong winds were received with the strongest storms. However, the main hazard was very heavy rain and flooding.Flooding
Very heavy rainfall accompanied some of the thunderstorms in the slow-moving complex, mainly across southeast Missouri, far southern Illinois, and southwest Kentucky. The highest measured hourly rainfall was just over three inches at the Cape Girardeau airport, which occurred between 12:30 and 1:30 PM. Additional rainfall brought the 24-hour total at Cape Girardeau to 4.14 inches by Friday morning. Widespread major street flooding was reported in the city of Cape Girardeau, MO. Elsewhere across the area, between one-half inch and one inch was quite common in just 30 minutes.

Radar and Satellite:
Thunderstorms moved from west to east along and north of an outflow boundary. As the outflow boundary slowed down over southeast Missouri, far western Kentucky, and far southern Illinois, the storms began to train across the same areas. The second image from the left is a radar animation centered on the Cape Girardeau area. It is about 10 megabytes, which may be slow to load.
The first image is a dual-pol radar rainfall estimate centered on the Cape Girardeau area. The one-hour rainfall estimates were about 15 percent too low.

A very moist south wind fed a slow-moving thunderstorm complex over our region. Surface dew points were in the lower 70's south of the complex. Instability was quite high to the south of the storm complex. The middle image shows surface-based cape values at 2 P.M. The third image is the wind profile from the Paducah radar. Note the increasing depth of the northerly outflow from the storm complex during the one-hour period ending at 2:15 PM.
