EF3 Severe 136-165 mph |
EF4 Extreme 166-200 mph |
EF5 Catastrophic 200+ mph |
Wind:
A squall line produced widespread wind damage across western Kentucky during the afternoon. The line of storms bowed out as it moved east, which is often an indication of damaging winds. Reports of wind damage were sporadic across southeast Missouri, but they became more numerous as the storms approached the Mississippi River. Downed trees and power lines resulted in lots of power outages, some of which lasted into the following day. Winds gusted from 60 to 70 mph at many locations in southwest Kentucky, including 66 mph at the National Weather Service office in Paducah.
Wind
Below are some images of wind velocity and reflectivity from the Paducah radar. The strongest winds coincided with the leading edge of heavy rain. An unconventional color scale was used for the velocity images to try to mask dealiasing issues. Images from Gibson Ridge software.

The storms increased ahead of a small-scale 500 mb shortwave over western Missouri. A moderately strong southwest wind flow of moist and very unstable air fueled the storms. Mixed-layer capes around 3000 j/kg fed into the southern end of the line of storms. Precipitable water values were near 2 inches. Images below from the NOAA/NWS Storm Prediction Center.
