Overview
The remnants of Tropical Storm Gordon merged with a cold front over the mid-section of the country. The tropical moisture squeezed out by the front produced widespread heavy raiinfall. Some flash flooding occurred in southern Illinois and southwest Indiana. During the afternoon hours, thunderstorms increased across southwest Indiana and western Kentucky. Enough low-level wind shear was present for a few rotating storms in southwest Indiana and northwest Kentucky.Tornadoes:

Flooding
Widespread heavy rainfall resulted in pockets of flash flooding. In Mount Vernon, Illinois, a few dozen residences were impacted by flooding of a creek. There were some evacuations. Significant road flooding occurred along the Interstate 64 corridor of southern Illinois, mainly north of the Marion/Carbondale region. Rivers and creeks rose rapidly. To view information on river flooding, see the latest river hydrographs on our AHPS website.
