November 2024 Climate Review:
The month of November averaged well above normal by 5 to 6 degrees. In Paducah and Cape Girardeau it was officially the 2nd Warmest November on record, while Poplar Bluff finished 4th warmest and Evansville notched their 5th warmest. The first 20 days of the month were all above normal, helping achieve the warmest start to November on record in Paducah and Cape Girardeau. 4 of our 5 climate sites broke or tied their warmest low temperatures on record for the month of November on the 4th when lows only dropped into the upper 60s to lower 70s (which is warmer than normal highs this time of year). Highs were commonly in the 60s, with even a few days reaching the 70s. A brief cool down occurred from the 21st through 23rd before another warmup back into the 60s on the 24th and 25th. We ended the month with below normal temperatures from the 26th through 30th. Paducah, KY finally observed a freeze on November 26th, which officially goes down as the latest freeze on record (previous record latest was November 13, 1975).
Precipitation varied from drier than normal across much of southeast Missouri and southern Illinois to wetter than normal across west Kentucky and southwest Indiana. The heaviest swath was observed from LBL into the Pennyrile of west Kentucky with 6 to 10 inches, which was roughly 2 to 6 inches wetter than normal. Meanwhile, much of southeast Missouri and southern Illinois only received 2 to 4 inches, which was roughly 1 to 2 inches drier than normal. The highest observed amount was 10.10” at the Kentucky mesonet station in McLean County near Calhoun and also at a CoCoRaHS station 2.2 miles northeast of Hanson, KY. The month ended with snow flying through the air on the 30th with totals ranging from 1 to 4 inches across portions of southern Illinois and southwest Indiana near the I-64 corridor. Evansville officially picked up 2” of snow, which tied their 9th snowiest November on record.
