Temperatures: Monthly average temperatures were around 1.5 to 2 degrees above normal. The month started off well above normal from March 1-7. Through the first week, it was the 4th warmest start to March on record in Paducah, 5th warmest in Cape Girardeau, and 9th warmest in Poplar Bluff. This was followed by cooler than normal temperatures from March 8-13. Highs on March 12 were only in the low to mid 30s after we started the day with lows in the teens. The first 80 degree temperature of the season was observed at a few locations on March 2 in southeast Missouri (Perryville, Marble Hill, Clearwater Dam) and on March 30 in western Kentucky and southwest Indiana (Evansville, Madisonville, Owensboro, and Providence).
Precipitation: March finished wetter than normal for much of the region. There were two zones of heavier rain across northern and southern portions of the area. The corridor from Sikeston to Paducah and Owensboro was the exception, where precipitation was near or even slightly drier than normal. Most locations received anywhere from 4 to 6 inches, but some localized higher amounts up to 7 to 8 inches were observed. The highest observed amount was a CoCoRaHS station in Johnson County Illinois (New Burnside 1.8 ENE) that registered 8.18”.
