Weather Forecast Office
June 2021 Climate Review: Temperatures finished slightly above normal by around 0.5 to 1 degree. Most noticeable were the number of days with overnight lows staying above 70. In Paducah, 17 of the 30 days observed low temperatures at or above 70, which is the 4th most on record for June (record is 21 back in 2014). Evansville recorded 16 days with lows in the 70s, which is tied for 5th most for June and the highest number since way back in 1934. On June 25, Cape Girardeau observed a low temperature of 80 degrees, which is only their 7th occurrence of an 80 degree low temperature on record. It was only 1 degree shy of the all-time warmest low temperature of 81 set back on July 13, 1985.
Precipitation varied, but a decent chunk of the region observed a drier than normal June, largely due to an abnormally dry final 18-20 days of the month. Paducah only picked up 0.22” of rain June 13-30, while Evansville observed a measly 0.17” during this stretch. There were pockets of heavier rainfall though, especially across west Kentucky and the Wabash River Valley, which lead to wetter than normal conditions for some of these areas. The highest observed amount was 9.00” at the Eddyville, KY COOP station located 5 miles south of town. On the flip side, some of the drier locations didn’t even manage to pick up 2” for the month.
There were a combined 15 severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings issued for our forecast area in June, which is well below the normal of 48 for June. This brings the yearly total up 63, which is the fewest number on record through July 1st since our office inception in 1995.
The graphic below is an interpolated rainfall map using actual observations. Please note that there are likely discrepancies in between observations, since the values are estimated based on nearest reports.
