Overview and Graphics

Temperatures averaged around 2 degrees above normal. The hottest stretches were from July 1-8 and July 20-24. High temperatures were routinely in the mid 90s to near 100 during these periods along with high humidity to produce numerous days with heat index readings of 105-110. A few days even observed heat index values in excess of 115. Cape Girardeau tied their all-time highest heat index of 123 degrees on July 20. Meanwhile, Paducah achieved 4 straight days of 110+ heat indices from July 5-8, which was the first occurrence of this since 1987. The temperature hit 100 degrees in Evansville on July 5 and 6, marking the first time since 2012 the city broke the century mark. Overnight lows were also quite warm, with Paducah failing to fall below 80 degrees on July 6th and 20th. The month ended with the coolest highs of the month with high temperatures only in the upper 70s to near 80.

The majority of the region experienced a wetter than normal July. This was despite the fact that much of western Kentucky and southeast Missouri was experiencing moderate to severe drought conditions through July 26th. The period from July 26-31 brought beneficial rainfall to the region with amounts ranging from 4-8 inches along the I-64 corridor and Tri-State region. Monthly amounts ranged mainly from 2 to 10 inches across the region, with the heaviest totals across sections of southern Illinois into northwest Kentucky and southwest Indiana. The highest observed total was 12.75” at a CoCoRaHS station south of Owensboro.
