Heavy Rainfall Causes Flash Flooding Tuesday July 7th
A cluster of showers and thunderstorms with very heavy rainfall developed early in the morning on Tuesday July 7th and trained over the same areas. The brunt of it fell over McCracken County into portions of southern Livingston County in Kentucky with the Paducah area seeing the worst of it. Barkley Regional Airport received 2.98 inches in under 2 hours while downtown Paducah picked up 5.44 inches in that same time frame.
The image below shows Dopplar Radar estimates of rainfall amounts from Monday morning July 6th through 10am on Wednesday July 8th. Wide swaths of 2 to 3 inches were seen from portions of northeast Cape Girardeau County eastward into portions of southeast Illinois and northwest Kentucky. The heaviest band then extends northeast into Spencer and Warrick counties in Indiana. Estimates show as much as 4 to 5 inches came down from southern Saline and northern Pope counties in Illinois eastward to Union and southwestern Henderson counties in northwest Kentucky. Another smaller area with 4 to 6 inch rainfall totals extends from McCracken county east into southern Livingston county.
The image below is an interpolated color map showing 48 hour rainfall totals from 7am Monday to 7am Wednesday.
NOTE: This image is an interpolation of actual reported values only and certain areas will not be represented well because of no reports around that location. If no value is close to that location then the image interpolates values based on the next closest report. In convective precipitation type events like this one there will be certain areas close by that receive substantially different rainfall amounts depending on where the heaviest storms set up.
