August 2020 Climate Review: Temperatures finished below normal by around 1 to 2 degrees. Paducah observed 10 days reaching 90 degrees compared to an average of around 13 for August. Evansville only observed 4 days in the 90s though, a far cry from their average of 12 for the month. Only 1 other August since 1998 has had fewer 90 degree days than this year (3 in August 2017).

August was another wetter than normal month for the majority of the region. It is typically one of our driest months of the year with only 2.75” to 3.5” on average. However, this year many areas received 4 to 6 inches, with some localized amounts up around 8 to 10 inches. The highest amounts were primarily focused across southeast Missouri, western Kentucky, and small portions of southwest Indiana (Vanderburgh, Warrick, and Spencer Counties). Evansville observed their wettest August since 2006 and their 12th wettest August on record dating back to 1897. Paducah observed 14 days with measurable rain, which is the 2nd most number of rainy days in August behind only the 16 days in August 1950. The highest observed total was 10.01” at a CoCoRaHS station 4 NW of Poplar Bluff, MO. Much of Perry County Missouri and some areas of southern Illinois along and north of Route 13 observed slightly below normal rainfall totals.
