Overview
A complex of thunderstorms moved south across the region during the early morning of August 12th. The storms intensified from Mississippi County Missouri into the Jackson Purchase region of west Kentucky between 8 and 10 AM. Significant wind damage occurred across Fulton, Hickman and southern Graves counties in Kentucky. There were also 2 EF-1 tornadoes that occurred, with one of them in the city of Hickman. Flash flooding was also reported across portions of this area and extended into Murray, KY.Tornadoes:

The Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale classifies tornadoes into the following categories:
EF0 Weak 65-85 mph |

EF5 Catastrophic 200+ mph |
Flooding
Rainfall amounts ranging from 1 to 3 inches occurred across portions of western Kentucky. This included Fulton, Hickman, Graves, and Calloway counties. Much of this rain fell within 30 minutes to 1 hour. Falling on already saturated soil, this led to flooding in the cities of Hickman, Fulton, Wingo, and Murray. The highest observed amount was just over 3" a few miles southeast of Murray.

Rare August Tornadoes
This graphic displays just how unusual August tornadoes are in our part of the country. Dating back to 1950, there have only been 20 documented tornadoes to have occurred in our 58 county forecast area and only 5 have been EF-1's.

Storm damage survey results confirm an EF-1
tornado began in the Terrace Drive and
Sunset Street area of Hickman with damage to
trees and power lines. This tornado tracked
to the ESE with more tree and power line
damage. A large tree fell onto a home on
Myron Cory Drive. The tornado was at its
widest when crossing KY-125 and 7th Street,
the latter of which had the most significant
cluster of damage with several trees
uprooted, portions of a few trees snapped,
and power line damage. One of the trees fell
onto a car. Nelson Street marked the last
damage points, with the tornado lifting to
the east.

Storm damage survey results confirm an EF-1
tornado began with a cluster of damage along
KY-307 just south of Johnson Rd, including
on Bizzle Rd and Laine Rd. Around two dozen
trees were blown down and a grain bin was
destroyed on Laine Rd. This was the
strongest and widest portion of the 2.6 mile
long tornado track. The tornado proceeded
northeastward, with damage to a portion of a
tree line south of Johnson Rd. Isolated
large branch and small tree limb damage was
found further northeast. The last damage
point was a large section of a tree falling
onto a home on Wilson Rd. The tornado
appears to have lifted shortly after.
