Heat and Severe Thunderstorms in the Eastern U.S.

A widespread heat wave will peak over the South and East today, with several dozen temperature records expected along the East Coast. Heat should begin to ease this weekend in the Northeast, while hazardous heat continues over the South. Severe thunderstorms capable of damaging winds are possible across parts of the Appalachians, Mid Atlantic, and Northeast this afternoon and evening. Read More >

Overview

A disturbance moving across the region resulted in thunderstorms developing during the afternoon hours.The main impact associated with these storms was flash flooding. Several locations picked up torrential rainfall amounts over a short time period. Over 4 inches of rain occurred in Union County, Illinois and Pike County, Indiana. Water rescues were needed in Union County and unfortunately 1 fatality occurred there due to the flash flooding. Damaging winds up around 60 mph occurred with several of the storms as well.
