F1 Montgomery/Robertson County Tornado
Counties: Montgomery/Robertson
Time: 12:50 AM CST
EF Scale: F1
Damage Path Length: 8.00 miles
Damage Path Width: 100 yards
Fatalities: 2
Injuries 0
Damage:

STORM DATA: The husband, Dennis Tooby and his wife, Karen Tooby, were killed when their mobile home was blown off its foundation at the 3400 block of Port Royal Rd. Mr. Tooby was a Australian national and a welder. Mrs. Tooby taught first grade at Hazelwood Elementary School in Clarksville. Two mobile homes were lifted off their foundation and hurled across the road. The tornado damaged 60 homes and one public building. Most of the damages were minor.

SHAMBURGER (2024) - NCDC and Storm Data incorrectly list a previous brief tornado in Montgomery County and another brief F0 tornado in Robertson County as separate from this tornado, when radar data and a storm damage survey map from NWS Nashville clearly indicate they were part of this tornado. Based on radar data and high resolution satellite imagery, the tornado touched down near Woodson Road just south of I-24, and moved northeast across Trough Springs Road, Drake Road, Highway 76, and crossed Highway 31A just south of Port Royal. Moving across Sulphur Fork into Robertson County, the tornado crossed Port Royal Road, Highway 76, and Caney Sink Road before lifting, for a total path length around 8 miles. The path width of this tornado in Storm Data is listed as 400 yards wide, but high resolution satellite imagery clearly indicates the tornado was only around 100 yards wide.

STORM DATA: One person was hospitalized due to injuries from the tornado. The other 5 people were treated and released for their injuries. 7 homes were destroyed, 15 homes had major damage and 14 had minor damage. 5 mobile homes were destroyed, 3 with major damage and 2 with minor damage. One business was destroyed and 3 other businesses were damaged. Several goats and cattle were killed. The heaviest damage was at 404 Glen Haven Rd. 2 mobile homes were destroyed and blown off their foundation. 18 outbuildings, 16 barns and 2 churches were damaged. A Chrysler Cirrus LX sedan was flipped and pushed 20 feet. A Ford Ranger truck flipped and rolled 90 feet. A 6 inch by 6 inch board was hurled through the roof of a modular home. Kirby Building Services located at 124 Kirby Road in the industrial park area, sustained 50 percent damage according to the Portland Fire Dept.

SHAMBURGER (2024) - Even though a storm survey damage map of the tornado path by NWS Nashville shows this tornado began in Robertson County, that county is not officially included in NCDC or Storm Data records. Based on radar data and high resolution satellite imagery, the tornado appears to have touched down between I-65 and Highway 31W in Robertson County, the crossed the highway into Sumner County. The tornado quickly intensified and caused severe damage to homes and outbuildings along Highway 52 near Maple St and College St. The tornado continued northeast through a heavily residential area, including the most damaged home at 404 Glen Haven Road mentioned in Storm Data. Moving into an industrial area of Portland, the tornado crossed TGT Road, Highway 109, Kirby Road, and Briley Lane before lifting near Windwood Drive, for a total path length around 6 miles. The path width in Storm Data is listed at a very large 900 yards wide, but high resolution satellite imagery clearly indicates the path width was around 100 yards wide.

F1 Sumner TN/Allen KY Tornado
Counties: Sumner TN/Allen KY
Time: 2:04 AM CST
EF Scale: F1
Damage Path Length: 2.75 miles
Damage Path Width: 50 yards
Fatalities: 0
Injuries 0

Damage:

STORM DATA - Near New Roe, KY, a large mobile home was lifted into the air, twisted, and tumbled down a hill. The home did have substantial tie downs which were ripped from the ground. One of the tie downs was bent into a "U" shape. Debris was blown across New Roe Road, about a quarter mile away. Other tree damage and minor structural damage was noted downwind from the mobile home site.

SHAMBURGER (2024) - Although not in official records, radar data and high resolution satellite imagery indicate this tornado actually began in extreme northern Sumner County, Tennessee east of Cameron Way, where several trees were blown down (F0) for about 3/4 mile. The tornado then moved northeast across the border into Kentucky west of North Jones Road, passing roughly along Clare New Roe Road then over New Roe Road where it caused the damage mentioned in Storm Data before lifting. Total path length was around 2.75 miles with a path width around 50 yards wide..

F1 Fentress County Tornado
Counties: Fentress
Time: 5:10 PM CST
EF Scale: F1
Damage Path Length: 4.30 miles
Damage Path Width: 100 yards
Fatalities: 0
Injuries 0

Damage:

STORM DATA - NWS Storm Survey indicated straight line winds. Some damage to homes with numerous trees and power lines down. 2 chicken houses were destroyed on the Chella LaRue farm. 2 businesses were damaged on U.S. Highway 127 South. Susan's Quilt Shop sustained damage to the roof and siding. Across the street, the Fentress Auto Repair was practically destroyed when the back portion of the metal building was blown out. A large tree fell on a home on Wayman Beaty Rd.

SHAMBURGER (2024) - Although listed as straight line winds in Storm Data, radar data and high resolution satellite imagery clearly indicate this was a supercell tornado in the Grimsley area of Fentress County. The tornado began west of Highway 127 and Thacker Road, then moved east damaging the businesses near the Thacker Road/Highway 127 intersection mentioned in Storm Data. Continuing eastward, the tornado blew down dozens of trees in forests and caused minor damage to homes and outbuildings along Burks Loop, Goney Road, the North Prong Clear Fork Creek, Wayman Beaty Road, Banner Roslin Road, Banner Springs Road, and Joe Rogers Road before lifting near Terry Lane. Total path length was around 4.3 miles with a path width of 200 yards. Newspaper reports mentioned some people were injured by the tornado, but Storm Data does not mention injuries and the exact number, if any, is unknown.

F1 Coffee County Tornado
Counties: Coffee
Time: 5:32 PM CST
EF Scale: F1
Damage Path Length: 4.10 miles
Damage Path Width: 50 yards
Fatalities: 0
Injuries 0
Damage:

STORM DATA: Trees were blown down and uprooted.

SHAMBURGER (2024) - It's unclear if this tornado actually occurred or was misreported due to numerous supercells that moved across this same area on the evening of November 10, 2002. The later and much stronger F2 tornado also occurred in the same area, and this may be a duplicate report. Regardless, NCDC and Storm Data list the incorrect time and location for this tornado, which was corrected based on radar data.

F2 Bedford/Coffee County Tornado
Counties: Bedford/Coffee
Time: 6:44 PM CST
EF Scale: F2
Damage Path Length: 16.0 miles
Damage Path Width: 500 yards
Fatalities: 2
Injuries 27
Damage:

STORM DATA: An F2 tornado struck near Bugscuffle and caused very minor injuries. A second floor was torn off 2 late model frame houses. Several houses had roofs stripped and a couple of barns were demolished. TEMA reported 5 homes destroyed, 6 damaged, one mobile home destroyed and a TVA 500 KV tower was destroyed. This tornado went into Coffee county, where it killed 2 people and injured 24 others. The 2 people were inside their mobile home when the tornado struck. The mobile home was in the New Union Heights subdivision, off state Highway 53 north of Manchester. The boy was moved from his mobile home to the Hillcrest Baptist Church. He died in the church at 705 PM CST. A relative of the boy, a 43-year-old male, was also killed. He was impaled on the upright lid of a washing machine. In total, 24 homes were destroyed, 51 other homes were damaged. 9 mobile homes were destroyed and 5 were damaged. 14 outbuildings also were damaged. The tornado also blew down a tree and a light pole at 3737 Woodbury Highway at mile marker 9 on Woodbury Highway. Also, two fully loaded tracker trailer trucks were blown over on I-24 near Busy Corner or mile marker 105. One truck was in the east bound lane and the other tracker trailer truck in the west bound lane of I-24.

SHAMBURGER (2024) - NCDC and Storm Data records incorrectly list this tornado twice in Coffee County, and the erroneous second entry has been removed. The time and path length of the tornado has also been adjusted based on radar data and high resolution satellite imagery. The tornado began in Bedford County along the Duck River around 2 miles southwest of Bugscuffle, and quickly strengthened as it moved east-northeast across Haley Road, Bugscuffle Road, Cortner Road, Lazy Branch Road, and Bedford Lake Road. Crossing into Coffee County and moving into very rugged terrain, the tornado weakened as it moved over Bly Cemetery Road, Cathey Ridge Road, Walden Ridge Rd, and Sheltontown Road. Once it reached more flat terrain, the tornado significantly widened and strengthened as it crossed Teal Lane, Sixteenth Model Road, Highway 41, and I-24. The tornado narrowed as it curved more east-northeast but remained intense across North Ballard Road, Bush Road, Matts Hollow Road, and Fredonia Road. The tornado narrowed even more but was very intense through New Union Heights, Bowman Lane, and Highway 53 in the New Union area where 2 people were killed. The tornado then rapidly weakened as it crossed Pomroy Road and lifted shortly after, for a total path length around 16 miles.

F0 Cumberland County Tornado
Counties: Cumberland
Time: 7:01 PM CST
EF Scale: F1
Damage Path Length: 0.10 miles
Damage Path Width: 25 yards
Fatalities: 0
Injuries 0
Damage:

STORM DATA: A tornado blew a tracter trailer truck on its side at the Crab Orchard interchange at I-40. This storm complex went on into Morgan county and spawned a tornado.

SHAMBURGER (2024) - It's unclear if this damage was from straight line winds or a tornado, as no NWS storm survey was conducted and 5 different supercells moved across this area during the evening of November 10, 2002. For now, with no other known damage, the path length and width were adjusted to be a brief touchdown, and the rating was lowered to F0. The time and location were also corrected to be near mile marker 325 on I-40 as indicated in NWS Nashville local storm reports. This supercell continued into Morgan County and produced the devastating F3 tornado in the Petros area.

F1 Van Buren County Tornado
Counties: Van Buren
Time: 8:05 PM CST
EF Scale: F1
Damage Path Length: 3.0 miles
Damage Path Width: 50 yards
Fatalities: 0
Injuries 0
Damage:

STORM DATA: EMA reported a frame house was demolished at intersection of Highway 111 and Highway 30.

SHAMBURGER (2024) - No NWS storm survey was conducted for this damage. There is little information on this tornado other than the reported damage to the frame house mentioned in Storm Data, which a NWS Nashville local storm report indicates was on Argo Road on the east side of Spencer. High resolution satellite imagery and radar data indicate this tornado touched down near Bluff View Drive in southern Spencer then made an S-shaped curve to the northeast across Highway 111, Hale Street, Argo Road, Highway 30, Turkey Scratch Road, Simmons Street, I.B. Maynard Street, and Turkey Scratch Road before lifting. Total path length was around 3 miles with a path width slightly smaller than indicated in Storm Data at 50 yards. Given the small size of the homes in this area and the limited damage on satellite imagery, the F2 rating seems overdone and was adjusted to F1.

F0 Cumberland County Tornado
Counties: Cumberland
Time: 8:35 PM CST
EF Scale: F0
Damage Path Length: 0.10 miles
Damage Path Width: 20 yards
Fatalities: 0
Injuries 0

Damage:

STORM DATA: Law enforcement reported a tornado. No damage reported.

SHAMBURGER (2024) - It's unclear if a tornado actually occurred in this area of southern Cumberland County due to the lack of damage, but a strongly rotating supercell did move through this area at the reported time.

F3 Cumberland County Tornado
Counties: Cumberland
Time: 9:32 PM CST
EF Scale: F3
Damage Path Length: 16.0 miles
Damage Path Width: 1000 yards
Fatalities: 4
Injuries 29

Damage:

STORM DATA: An F3 tornado struck the Lake Tansi area and the southern sections of Crossville Sunday night, killing 4 people and injuring 18. 33 homes and mobile were destroyed and 128 homes and mobile homes were damaged. There was damage to one public building. The heaviest damage was along Lantana Drive, Dunbar Road, and Pigeon Ridge Road. 5 homes were damaged on U.S. Highway 127 and just south of Three Creek Road. One well built home lost an entire roof and several walls. The couple, their 3 children, and a guest, huddled under a mattress in the hallway. 50 acres of hardwoods were twisted and tangled. 100-year-old oak trees were snapped like wheat straws. Mobile homes on the Ballyhoo Campground and modular homes in Lake Tansi were destroyed. The four fatalities occurred in mobile homes. A couple was killed at 298 Lantana Drive when their mobile home was lifted off its foundation and placed on another trailer. Edward, 80 and Mary Laffer 75 were killed. Another couple died at 4040 Lone Wolf Circle. Robert, 55 and Sandy Scarbrough, 52, were killed and their bodies were found across Lake Mohawk.

SHAMBURGER (2024) - This historic, massive tornado, which is the worst in Cumberland County history, was spawned by one of at least 5 different supercells that moved across the county on this evening. Radar data and high resolution satellite imagery indicate the tornado began west of Stave Mill Road about 10.6 miles southwest of Crossville, then moved northeast across Flynns Cove Road, Lantana Road, Vandever Road, then across Lantana Drive where 2 people were killed. Continuing across the northwest side of Lake Tansi and west side of Lake Mohawk, the tornado crossed Nicholson Drive, Dunbar Road, then Lone Wolf Circle where two more people were killed. Widespread damage continued through the Parkway Estates area on Old Mail Road, Coon Hollow Road, Pigeon Ridge Road, and Davidson Road. The tornado began to weaken as it crossed Highway 127 into the Highland View area, crossing Highland Lane, Highway 70, and I-40 before lifting near McGinnis Road after approximately 16 miles on the ground. The path length and path width of this tornado were both increased based on high resolution satellite imagery. Newspapers also report at least 29 injured, while Storm Data lists 18 injured, so 29 is used here.
