Heavy Snow in the West and Upper Midwest; Freezing Rain in the Northeast

Heavy snow will continue in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and flash flooding is possible in the lower elevations of the southern Sierra Nevada. Expect long period south swell with breaking waves up to 10 to 14 feet from 10 PM Tuesday to 10 PM Thursday along the coast from Monterey County to Sonoma County. Impacts include dangerous swimming and surfing conditions. Large waves can sweep across the beach without warning, pulling people into the sea from rocks, jetties and beaches. Sudden immersion in cold water can result in cold water shock even for the most experienced swimmers. Cold water shock can result in dramatic changes in breathing, heart rate and blood pressure, greatly increasing the risk of drowning in rough open waters.
