Periods of light to moderate precipitation continue into Thursday morning. Valleys will see a wintry mix, watch for icy spots as road temperatures drop to freezing by early Thursday. The valleys of Northwest Montana have the highest potential for occasional slush/snow covered roads as snow levels will be the slowest to rise there tonight. Meanwhile, passes will see periods of snow cover. Watch out for these changeable conditions and allow a little extra travel time.
Confidence is increasing in a prolonged precipitation event across the Northern Rockies from Wednesday to Saturday, associated with an atmospheric river. Abundant rainfall will raise the risk of rock and mudslides. Snow is expected mainly for higher elevations, but snow levels begin near valleys floors initially, rising to at least 4,000-5,000 feet in northwest Montana, and 5,000-7,000 feet along and south of I-90 on Thursday. Be sure to monitor forecast updates, especially if you have travel plans, particularly over mountain passes.
