We're expecting freezing rain across portions of the region on Sunday. Freezing rain is liquid precipitation that freezes on contact with cold surfaces as it falls into a sub-freezing layer at the surface. It creates a dangerous coating of ice on roads, walkways, trees, and power lines. Continue to follow forecast updates throughout the weekend!
A band of wintry mix is expected to move across the region Sunday, with surface temperatures being near or below freezing. This will allow ice accumulations across much of the area, with the highest amounts along the northern Plateau and northern ridges in Virginia and Kentucky (not shown). Hazardous driving conditions after onset of the precipitation Sunday are likely.
December was warmer than normal, with near normal precipitation, for most locations.
The year 2024 was warmer than normal across the region. Chattanooga had their driest year since 2016. Knoxville had 9 consecutive days of 3 inches or more snow depth in January 2024, which is the longest stretch on record.
Daily climate data (normals and records) for today for the sites plotted. The current normals period is 1991-2020.
