Heat and Fire Weather Concerns in the West; Excessive Rainfall Possible in the South-Central U.S.

Heat will build over the Intermountain West and the Southwest the next couple of days. Lightning from dry thunderstorms can create new fire starts and combined with gusty winds may cause a fire to rapidly grow in Oregon and northern California. The fire weather program at WFO Morristown involves issuing specific forecasts for eight different fire districts:

1. Jefferson National Forest and Virginia State District 6 (extreme southwest Virginia)
2. Northern Cherokee National Forest (extreme northeast Tennessee).
3. Great Smoky Mountains National Park (Tennessee side only).
4. Southern Cherokee National Forest (extreme southeast Tennessee).
5. Nantahala National Forest (extreme southwest North Carolina).
6. East Tennessee District [east] (northeast Tennessee).
7. East Tennessee District [west] (central east Tennessee).
8. Cumberland District [south] (southeast Tennessee).
