Tropical Storm Fay Dumps Heavy Rain Over
The Northern Gulf Coast - August 23, 2008

Tropical Storm Fay will be known for its interesting trek across the state of Florida and its very heavy rainfall. A zoomed out view of the rainfall that occurred during the lifespan of Tropical Storm Fay and its interesting track across the southeastern US can be seen in the WPC rainfall graphic to the right.

Across our area, a general 5-8 inches of rain fell from Dauphin Island northward to Camden, AL with a few spots observing over 9 inches of rain. Highland Home, AL (Crenshaw County) had a measurement of 12.16 inches of rain and 9.95 inches of rain was observed in Camden, AL (Wilcox County) during Tropical Storm Fay. The swath of heavy rain can be seen in the graphic below shows the storm total precipitation estimates from the Mobile (KMOB) Doppler Radar from 723pm on August 22 through 837am on August 26.

During Fay, the storms continued to train and move over the same general area throughout the entirety of the event. These training storms caused several streets to flood and eventually become impassable, especially across Mobile and Baldwin Counties in southwestern Alabama. In Mobile County, the hardest hit areas were along the Dog River and Bayou Sara. The combination of heavy rain and above normal tides caused the water to rise rapidly which resulted in houses being evacuated.
