Tropical Storm Arlene - June 11, 2005
On June 8, 2005, Arlene formed as a tropical depression near the coast of Honduras. Arlene quickly strengthened to a tropical storm Arlene continued to intensify as it moved north across the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Arlene weakened as it made landfall near Perdido Key, FL around 130pm on June 11, 2005. As Arlene tracked inland across southern Alabama, it took a path eerily similar to Hurricane Ivan just a nine months prior.
Since Arlene followed a very similar track as Ivan, trees that had been severely damaged by Ivan were completely blown down as Arlene moved inland. One of the highest wind speeds during Arlene was at the Navarre Fire Station with a recorded wind gust of 52 knots. Trees and power lines were blown down along the track of Arlene with most of the wind damage near the center of the storm. Very little structural damage was reported, except for some trees falling onto houses. Only 1 tornado was reported with minor damage around the Navarre, FL area.
Minor beach erosion occurred from Dauphin Island, AL to Destin, FL due to storm surge. The highest storm tides (storm surge + tide) were at Pensacola Coast Guard Station with 3.9 feet, Perdido Pass with 3.7 feet and Destin with 3.3 feet. Coastal flooding occurred in several places along the Santa Rosa Island. High water breaches occurred at Fort Pickens in several spots and between the beaches in Pensacola and Navarre, FL. Fort Pickens alone suffered about $2.5 million in damage from Arlene (2005 standard).
Arlene produced 5+ inches of rain across the area as it moved north across the NWS Mobile county warning area. The track and rainfall graphic can be viewed below (via NOAA WPC). The only flooding reported was around Mobile Regional Airport where 3.5 inches of rain fell in a very short period of time. This rainfall caused street flooding around communities near the airport in the western part of the Mobile metro area. The highest 24 hour rainfall totals were Mobile Regional Airport with 4.52 inches, West Mobile with 5.81 inches, Alberta, AL with 4.60 inches and Pace, FL with 4.42 inches.
